Al-Isra · Makki · ayah 91 of 111

Al-Isra 17:91

“Or [until] you have a garden of palm trees and grapes and make rivers gush forth within them in force [and abundance]”

Essence

Failing a spring for Makkah, they said, prove your rank for yourself: own an orchard of palms and vines with rivers bursting through it.

A reflection

Wouldn't a rich prophet have been more convincing?

The demand shifts here. The previous ayah asked for a spring lanā, for us. This one asks for a garden laka, for you. A theological commentary spells out the logic: suppose you will not burst rivers open for our sake; then burst them for your own.

The report gives their reason. Ask your Lord for gardens and palaces and treasure, they said, to free you from what we see you chasing. You stand in the markets and look for a living, as we do. Then we would know your rank with your Lord.

The objection still sounds reasonable to many people. Surely God's chosen one would be visibly favoured. Surely blessing shows. A man chooses a financial adviser partly because of the car he sees parked in her bay. He never asks about her record. The car seems to answer for it.

The Quran takes this logic apart. When his Lord tests a man by honouring him and giving him plenty, he says: my Lord has honoured me. When He tests him by measuring out his provision, he says: my Lord has humiliated me. No, comes the reply, kallā (89:15-17). Both are tests. Neither is a verdict.

And the Prophet ﷺ chose the narrow side on purpose. Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim record his prayer: O Allah, make the provision of the family of Muhammad just enough to live on. Not an orchard. Enough.

So here is the honest answer to the doubt. A rich prophet would have been more impressive. He would not have been more convincing to anyone thinking clearly, because wealth proves only that someone has wealth. What the chiefs needed to examine was the Book already in front of them. An orchard would have given them one more thing to look at instead.
