Al-Kahf 18:102

“Then do those who disbelieve think that they can take My servants instead of Me as allies? Indeed, We have prepared Hell for the disbelievers as a lodging.”

Saheeh International

Essence

The patrons they took instead of Him are called, in the same sentence, My servants.

A reflection

He calls them My servants

The single most devastating word in this verse is a possessive.

The people being described went looking for a patron other than Allah. And in the sentence naming what they chose, Allah calls those patrons My servants.

A legal commentary identifies them as particular figures who were in fact worshipped. A long commentary records other views: the devils whom people obeyed, or the images themselves, called servants as elsewhere in the Qur'an.

On every reading the ownership is stated before the complaint is.

So the arrangement was never a competition. It was a man going round the owner to deal with the staff.

And the word for the association has its own picture. The lexicons give it as one slave with several owners who never agree. Splitting what belongs to One, until the thing being owned serves partners who cannot settle anything between them.

That is the reason shirk is described as a wrong and not merely an error. It is a thing put where it does not belong, and then torn.

Here is where this lands on a person who worships nothing at all.

Almost nobody today chooses an idol. What people do is route their requests. Who has to be kept sweet. Whose approval releases the next thing. Who it is dangerous to disappoint.

Everybody has a small cabinet of such figures, and almost nobody has ever audited it.

The arrogance in that is not loud and does not feel like pride. It feels like realism. It is the settled sense that the real levers are held by people whose names you know.

And the verse answers it with two words. My servants. Every name in your cabinet is on His payroll, and was placed there, and will be returned.

You have been negotiating with staff while the owner was in the room.
