Al-Kahf 18:16

“[The youths said to one another], "And when you have withdrawn from them and that which they worship other than Allāh, retreat to the cave. Your Lord will spread out for you of His mercy and will prepare for you from your affair facility."”

Essence

Six ayat after they prayed for two things, the same two things come back as a promise, in almost the same words.

A reflection

Their own prayer handed back to them

Put this ayah beside 18:10 and read the two slowly.

At the cave mouth they said: our Lord, give us from Your own side mercy, and prepare for us from our affair rightness. Six ayat later the sentence comes back: your Lord will spread for you of His mercy, and will prepare for you from your affair ease.

Mercy, then prepare, then from your affair. Two requests, the same two, in the same order, with the same verb in the middle. The only changes are the ones that matter. They asked; now they are told. They said from Your side; now it is of His mercy. They asked for rightness; now they are promised the thing you lean on.

The Qur'an does not announce that the prayer was answered. It simply says it back to them.

A weaver who sends a drawn-out pattern and a colour sample off to a mill knows the strange feeling of the bolt arriving. The repeat is hers, worked out on squared paper over a fortnight. She has never seen it at length, never in the actual yarn, never with the selvedge finished. It is her design and she did not make it, and it is better than the drawing.

That is what an answered prayer looks like from inside. Not a new thing. Your own sentence, come back woven.

Which is a reason to be careful what you put on the paper.
