Al-Kahf 18:41
أَوْ يُصْبِحَ مَآؤُهَا غَوْرًا فَلَن تَسْتَطِيعَ لَهُۥ طَلَبًا
“Or its water will become sunken [into the earth], so you would never be able to seek it."”
Saheeh International
Essence
Nothing is destroyed here: the water goes down, stays exactly where it is, and becomes something you will never be able to look for.
A reflection
The one direction you cannot follow
The lexicons give this root as going down: lowness, sinking, the bottom of a thing. Their standing image for it is water sinking away into the sand while you watch. Gone down, out of reach, nothing left to dig for.
They add that the low country was named by this root, set against the high ground.
One commentary puts the matter plainly. It sinks and goes low in the earth, the opposite of the water that rises and seeks the surface. The sinking water seeks the underside. And it quotes another verse: say, have you considered, if your water became sunken, who then could bring you flowing water.
In a lead mine the sump pumps are the whole argument. Stop them for a week and the workings fill from below, quietly, with no noise and no collapse. The ore is still down there. Every seam the men knew is exactly where it was. Nobody will ever see it again, and nobody can be blamed, because nothing was broken.
This is the direction pride never accounts for. We are braced for things being taken away upward, by rivals, by theft, by weather, by people who want what we have. Every one of those is a direction you can face.
Down is not a direction you can face. There is nothing to confront. The water simply withdraws into ground that was always under your feet, on a permission you never knew you were holding.
And the sentence does not say He takes it. It says it becomes sunken. The verb is quiet. He does not have to arrive.
