Al-Kahf 18:85

فَأَتْبَعَ سَبَبًا

“So he followed a way”

Saheeh International

Essence

Given a rope to everything, he picked up one rope and walked.

A reflection

He was given every rope and took one

The verse before this gave him a way to everything. This verse is two words long, and it is where the account actually starts.

The grammar is worth slowing down for. The noun is singular and indefinite. Not the ways. Not his ways. A way.

So a man holding the means to anything at all reached for one of them. A concise commentary fills in the direction: he took a road towards the west.

There is a whole discipline in that sentence, and most capable people never learn it.

A forester planning a new plantation marks a single ride through it before any tree goes in. Visitors ask why there is only one. Because every extra path is edge, and edge is where the wind gets in and the crop fails.

One road is not a limitation. It is the condition of arriving anywhere.

And notice what he does not do. He does not survey all his options. He does not keep every means warm in case the first one disappoints. He does not take a little of each road.

The lexicons on the verb give the plain picture: walking behind someone, going after them on their track. A calf at its mother's heels. The word is about commitment of direction, not about possibility.

Which exposes a modern way of wasting a life. We collect means and call the collecting progress. Qualifications, contacts, skills, savings, options. The pile grows and the man does not move.

The verse says he was given the ropes, and then it says he climbed one.

And the two-word brevity is itself the lesson. What took him years is recorded in a breath, because a journey begun is not interesting yet. Only where it ends is.
