Al-Kahf 18:92

ثُمَّ أَتْبَعَ سَبَبًا

“Then he followed a way”

Saheeh International

Essence

The third journey of a man who had been to both ends of the world goes to the middle.

A reflection

The third journey goes to the middle

Two commentaries tell you where this road goes, and the answer is not another extreme.

A concise commentary says he took a road other than the first two, cutting across between the east and the west. A linguistic commentary says the same: a third road, crossing from the sun's rising towards the north.

So the man who had stood at both ends of the inhabited world turns inland.

And what he finds there is a gap between two mountains, with people living in the corridor.

A bridge gang will tell you which span is the hard one. Not the ones at either end, which sit on the bank and have ground to lean against. The middle span, which has nothing under it and has to be held by what is on both sides of it.

The edges are dramatic. The middle is structural.

There is a habit in capable people that this verse quietly corrects. The edges get the attention. The furthest, the first, the hardest, the most extreme. They photograph well and they are easy to describe.

And the thing that actually fails is always the unglamorous join in the middle.

Notice also what each journey produced. At the west, a decision. At the east, a silence. Here, the only permanent structure in the whole account.

The two journeys to the ends of the earth left nothing standing. The journey across the middle left a barrier that a report in the two Sahihs describes as still there generations later, being slowly opened.

Which is a usable measure for anyone who travels a great deal, in any sense. Where did you actually build something.

It is very unlikely to have been at the furthest point you reached.
