لَّقَدْ جِئْتُمْ شَيْـًٔا إِدًّا
“You have done an atrocious thing.”
Saheeh International
Essence
Turning from speaking about them to speaking to them, the Qur'an names the claim for what it is: a monstrous thing, heavy enough to groan.
A reflection
The surah turns Maryam's accusation around
The shape of this ayah has been heard before in the same surah, and the echo is deliberate enough to stop a reader.
The pattern is laqad jiʾ... shayʾan: you have brought a thing that is... A search of the whole Qur'an finds it exactly four times. Twice in Al-Kahf, when Mūsā protests at al-Khiḍr: you have brought a grievous thing (18:71), you have brought a terrible thing (18:74). And twice in Surah Maryam.
The first time in Maryam is 19:27. Maryam carries her newborn back to her people, and they meet her with these words: O Maryam, you have brought a thing unheard of. A child without a husband. They thought it was the scandal of the age.
The second time is here. Allah addresses those who claim He has taken a son: you have brought a thing monstrous.
Set the two together and the surah's argument becomes visible. Maryam's people thought the shocking thing was a baby born without a father. They were wrong. That birth was a sign, and the baby himself answered them from the cradle: I am the servant of Allah. The genuinely monstrous thing came later. It was the claim that this servant, born of a woman, was the son of the Most Merciful.
The accusation that was wrongly made against the mother is rightly made against the claim about her son. The same grammar. The opposite verdict.
It is a reminder that crowds are often shocked by the wrong thing. They gasp at what is unusual. The Qur'an asks what is actually grave.
