Al-Kahf 18:71

“So they set out, until when they had embarked on the ship, he [i.e., al-Khiḍr] tore it open. [Moses] said, "Have you torn it open to drown its people? You have certainly done a grave thing."”

Essence

A ship is named in Arabic for planing the face of the water, and the narration says he opened it with an adze.

A reflection

Every observable fact in his objection was correct

The ordinary reading has Musa failing, losing his temper, speaking out of turn.

All of that is true and none of it makes him wrong about what he saw.

The hull had been opened. The men aboard had carried them for nothing. Water comes into a holed boat. A boat that fills drowns the people in it.

There is no error anywhere in that chain.

And the verse does not correct a single item of it. The answer, when it comes, does not say the boat was not holed, or that nobody was at risk. It adds one fact he did not have.

So this is not a story about a man who jumped to conclusions. It is a story about a man who reasoned carefully from everything available to him and arrived somewhere false.

That is a far more uncomfortable lesson, and it is the one most readers slide past.

In one village a man rang in a report of a sheep being loaded into a van after dark on a quiet lane. Every detail he gave was accurate and he was right to ring. The man with the sheep owned it, and was moving it because the field had flooded.

Nobody behaved badly. The information was good. The conclusion was wrong.

Which leaves the hardest question this verse asks. If careful reasoning from true facts can land you somewhere false, what is the remedy.

The passage gives only one, and it is not better reasoning. It is a man who knew, who had promised to explain, and who had asked for silence until he did.

Musa had agreed to that eleven words earlier.
