Al-Baqarah · Madani · ayah 154 of 286

Al-Baqarah 2:154

“And do not say about those who are killed in the way of Allāh, "They are dead." Rather, they are alive, but you perceive [it] not.”

Essence

The ayah takes one word away from the grieving, 'dead', and gives them a truer one, with an honest note about what they cannot see.

A reflection

A word taken off a grieving tongue

Many people meet this ayah in one of two ways. Some hear only a battle verse. Others hear a gentle way of saying that the dead live on in our memories. Both slide past what it says.

Start with its shape. It is a prohibition, and what it prohibits is a word. Wa lā taqūlū: do not say. Do not say of those killed in Allah's way: amwāt, dead.

The commentaries record why. Fourteen Muslims were killed at Badr, six of the emigrants and eight of the Helpers. People in Madina spoke of them the way people always speak of the dead. So-and-so has died, they said, and the good things of life have gone from him. The ayah stops the sentence in their mouths.

The Arabs used mawt for strength going out of a thing. A fire died when its embers went cold and no spark was left. The ayah refuses that picture for these men. Bal aḥyāʾ: rather, alive.

And not 'alive in our hearts'. The commentaries discuss that reading, that they live on through their good name, and set it aside as weak. One gives the meaning plainly: alive with Me, in life and delight, provided for. Another adds that if it only meant they will live again at the Resurrection, they would be no different from anyone else, because everyone will.

So the ayah neither makes death glamorous nor softens it into a memory. It corrects a word, because the word was untrue.
