Al-Baqarah البقرة
Madani · 286 ayat · 286 with pondering
- Ayah 1Before one word of guidance, three bare letters stop you: the Book is made of sounds you own, yet no one can match it.
- Ayah 2Every human text hedges; this one opens by saying nothing in it will unsettle you, and that its guidance reaches those who carry a shield.
- Ayah 3The God-conscious trust what they cannot see, keep their prayer standing straight, and let part of what He gave them go out again.
- Ayah 4The God-conscious receive this revelation as the latest link in one long chain, and they are certain of the life that comes last.
- Ayah 5Those who live this way are carried now by guidance from their Lord, and in the end they reach what they hoped for.
- Ayah 6For those who have settled on covering the truth, a warning and silence land the same; the messenger's task is to deliver, not to force.
- Ayah 7A heart that refuses long enough is finally sealed by the One who holds all hearts, and its hearing and sight close with it.
- Ayah 8Some say the words of faith firmly and fluently, and Allah answers with a verdict firmer still: they are not believers at all.
- Ayah 9They try to outwit Allah and the believers, but the only one their trick ever lands on is themselves, and they cannot even feel it.
- Ayah 10A heart can fall ill like a body, dimming like a hazy sun; fed on its own sickness and habitual lies, the illness only grows.
- Ayah 11Told to stop spoiling the earth, they answer that they are nothing but reformers: the oldest self-portrait of those who do harm.
- Ayah 12Allah settles the argument: they, and no one else, are the spoilers, and the saddest part is that they cannot feel it.
- Ayah 13Invited to believe as ordinary believers do, they sneer at the 'fools'; the Quran turns the word round: the light-minded ones are the sneerers.
- Ayah 14To believers they say a thin 'we believe'; alone with their ringleaders they speak with full conviction: 'we are with you, we were only mocking'.
- Ayah 15The mockers think they are the audience; Allah turns their mockery back on them and lets their excess run on while they wander in circles.
- Ayah 16They handed over guidance and took error in return: a trade that earned nothing and lost the capital besides.
- Ayah 17A fire kindled in the dark lights up the faces around it, then goes out, leaving its makers blinder than before: the hypocrite's borrowed light.
- Ayah 18With every door by which guidance enters shut, hearing, speech and sight, the ones whose fire went out cannot find their way back.
- Ayah 19Life-giving rain arrives with thunder and lightning; some hear only danger and plug their ears, yet no one stands outside Allah's encircling.
- Ayah 20They walk a few steps in each flash of truth and freeze between, forgetting that their eyes are on loan.
- Ayah 21The first call to all humanity: worship the Lord who raised you and everyone before you from nothing, so that you may be guarded.
- Ayah 22Floor laid, roof raised, water sent and fruit grown before you arrived: so do not set up rivals to the Host.
- Ayah 23If you doubt that this came from Allah, the test is open: bring a single surah like it, with every helper you can find.
- Ayah 24You have not matched it, and you never will; so guard yourselves from the Fire fed by people and the stones they worshipped.
- Ayah 25Straight after the Fire comes news meant to light up a face: gardens, fruit both familiar and new, pure company, and no ending.
- Ayah 26Allah is not too grand to speak of a mosquito; how a person reacts to a small example shows where their heart already stands.
- Ayah 27Those who step outside unravel pledges, cut what Allah ordered joined and spread ruin, and in the end lose their own capital.
- Ayah 28You were nothing and He gave you life; He will take it, give it again and bring you back to Him.
- Ayah 29Everything on earth was made for your benefit, seven heavens were shaped above it, and their Maker knows every part.
- Ayah 30Before we existed, Allah announced us to the angels; they asked about our bloodshed, and He answered that He knows what they do not.
- Ayah 31Allah was the first teacher: He taught Adam the names of all things, and human honour began as knowledge given, not earned.
- Ayah 32At the edge of their knowledge the angels did not defend themselves; they glorified Allah and said: we know only what You taught us.
- Ayah 33The one taught became the teacher of angels, and Allah reminded them that He knows the unseen, what they show, and what they hide.
- Ayah 34All bowed at Allah's command except one, who refused out of pride: the first sin was not ignorance of Allah but arrogance before Him.
- Ayah 35The whole Garden was opened to Adam and his wife; only one tree was closed, and even its nearness was to be avoided.
- Ayah 36Satan could not push them out, only make them slip; the descent began a story of enmity, settlement and provision, for a time.
- Ayah 37After the slip, Allah gave Adam the very words to come back with, and turned to him in mercy, again and again.
- Ayah 38Sent down to earth, humanity was promised guidance; whoever follows it is freed from fear of what is coming and grief for what is gone.
- Ayah 39The other path after the descent: those who cover the truth and deny Allah's signs become the Fire's inseparable companions.
- Ayah 40Allah turns to the Children of Israel: remember My favour, keep your pledge and I will keep Mine, and hold Me alone in awe.
- Ayah 41Believe in what confirms your own scripture, do not lead the way in rejecting it, and never trade Allah's signs for any price.
- Ayah 42Two ways to bury the truth: blend it with falsehood until it cannot be told apart, or keep it hidden while you know it.
- Ayah 43Prayer for the body, zakah for wealth, and bowing alongside others: faith made visible, practised together.
- Ayah 44Urging goodness on others while leaving yourself out, with the Book open in your hands, defies reason itself.
- Ayah 45Lean on patience and on prayer; prayer is heavy, except for hearts humbled before Allah.
- Ayah 46The humble are those certain, without having seen it, that they will meet their Lord and return to Him; that certainty makes prayer light.
- Ayah 47Allah repeats His call to remember His favour, and how He preferred them in their time: a gift that asks for gratitude.
- Ayah 48Guard against a Day when no one can pay another's debt, no ransom is taken, and no plea succeeds without Allah's leave.
- Ayah 49Allah rescued the Children of Israel from Pharaoh's people, who killed their sons; both the suffering and the rescue were a great test.
- Ayah 50Allah split the sea for the Children of Israel, brought them through, and drowned Pharaoh's people before their eyes.
- Ayah 51Mūsā hurried to meet his Lord; his rescued people could not wait forty nights, and poured their own gold into a god they could see.
- Ayah 52After the worst of wrongs came a pardon that wiped the trail clean, so that the forgiven would let the gift show.
- Ayah 53To a people who had just failed, Allah gave a Book that separates true from false, so that they could find the way again.
- Ayah 54Mūsā named the wrong and called his people back to the One who shaped them; the hardest repentance ended in His mercy.
- Ayah 55They set terms for faith, 'not until we see Allah openly', and a single blast from the sky showed how little a creature can bear.
- Ayah 56The men who demanded to see Allah were raised from death itself, and handed back the one thing no one can give themselves: another day.
- Ayah 57In a wilderness they had earned, Allah shaded them and fed them each morning; their ingratitude could not touch Him, only them.
- Ayah 58A city of plenty opened for almost nothing: bow at the gate, and ask in one word for your sins to be set down.
- Ayah 59Told to ask for their sins to be set down, they added one letter, asked for wheat, and shuffled in mocking.
- Ayah 60From a dry rock came twelve springs, one per tribe so none would quarrel: take Allah's provision freely, and do not wreck His earth.
- Ayah 61Fed from heaven each morning, they pined for the onions of their old life, and small disobediences grew into rejecting Allah's signs.
- Ayah 62Right after a people's failures, the door opens: no name saves or damns, only faith in Allah and the Last Day, and good deeds.
- Ayah 63With a mountain held over their heads, they were told: take what We have given you with strength, and keep what is in it alive.
- Ayah 64Once the mountain was gone they turned their backs; only Allah's favour and mercy stopped them from losing everything they had.
- Ayah 65A village that fished the Sabbath through a loophole was told 'Be apes': a likeness of humanity for a likeness of obedience.
- Ayah 66The Sabbath village became a fetter on the feet of everyone after it, and a reminder that softens the hearts of the God-conscious.
- Ayah 67Asked to find a murderer, Mūsā brought one simple command: slaughter a cow; they heard a joke, and he heard the ignorance in mockery.
- Ayah 68Their first question was answered patiently, neither old nor young but in between, with a gentle push: now do what you are commanded.
- Ayah 69They asked about the colour, and the answer made the cow rarer: a deep, pure yellow that gladdens the heart of anyone who looks.
- Ayah 70A third question, the excuse that all cows look alike, and then, at last, 'if Allah wills': the first small sign of a turning heart.
- Ayah 71Unyoked, unmarked and whole, the cow was finally described; 'now you have brought the truth', they said, and slaughtered her, though they nearly did not.
- Ayah 72A man was killed and each side pushed the blame onto the other, but Allah was always going to bring out what they hid.
- Ayah 73Struck with part of the cow, the dead man rose and named his killer: so Allah gives life to the dead, and shows His signs.
- Ayah 74After all those signs their hearts hardened like rock, or harder: even rock lets water through, and some falls in awe of Allah.
- Ayah 75The believers hoped their neighbours would believe; Allah reminded them that some had heard His word, understood it, and knowingly bent it.
- Ayah 76In public some said 'we believe'; in private they scolded each other for sharing what Allah had opened to them.
- Ayah 77The private room and the public one are a single room to Allah; He knows what is hidden as fully as what is shown.
- Ayah 78Some held a scripture they did not know, living on wishes, borrowed tales and bare recitation: guesswork about the things that matter most.
- Ayah 79Ruin for those who write words themselves, label them 'from Allah' and sell them cheap: ruin for the writing, and for the earnings.
- Ayah 80They said the Fire would only touch them for a few counted days; the reply asked: did Allah promise that, or are you guessing?
- Ayah 81Not by counted days: whoever earns evil until his wrongdoing closes round him on every side belongs to the Fire, and stays.
- Ayah 82Beside the warning stands the promise: those who believe and do what sets things right are the people of the Garden, for good.
- Ayah 83The covenant in one breath: worship Allah alone, then widen the circle of kindness from parents to the poor, and speak well to everyone.
- Ayah 84They pledged not to shed one another's blood or drive one another from home, and called it 'your own blood'; they agreed, and bore witness.
- Ayah 85They fought their own people for their allies, then ransomed the captives as scripture required, keeping one command and breaking the rest.
- Ayah 86They bought the near life and paid with the lasting one; for such a bargain, nothing is lightened and no one comes to help.
- Ayah 87Allah sent messenger after messenger, and strengthened ʿĪsā with the Holy Spirit; yet whenever a messenger brought what their desires disliked, pride…
- Ayah 88They said their hearts were wrapped against the truth; the reply: the distance came from their own disbelief, so little do they believe.
- Ayah 89They had prayed for victory through a coming prophet; when what they recognised arrived, from a people they had not expected, they rejected it.
- Ayah 90Envious that Allah gives His favour to whom He wills, they sold their own selves for rejection, and came away with anger upon anger.
- Ayah 91They said 'we believe in what came to us' and rejected the truth confirming it: truth loved only as ours was never loved as truth.
- Ayah 92Mūsā brought clear proofs, and still, once he was gone, they took the calf: the old story told again, now as an argument.
- Ayah 93Told to take the covenant firmly and listen, they said 'we hear and we disobey', and love of the calf soaked into their hearts.
- Ayah 94If the Garden is yours alone, then wish for death: a claim to own the Hereafter, put to a test that cost one word.
- Ayah 95They will never wish for death, because of what their own hands have sent ahead, and Allah knows the wrongdoers.
- Ayah 96They cling to any life and wish for a thousand years, yet long life will not move them an inch from the punishment.
- Ayah 97To be hostile to Jibrīl is to be hostile to what he carried, by Allah's permission, to the Prophet's heart: guidance and good news.
- Ayah 98Hostility to any of Allah's angels or messengers is hostility to Him, and Allah Himself stands against those who reject.
- Ayah 99Allah has sent down signs that are plain to see, and only those who have broken out of every bound reject them.
- Ayah 100Every time they made a pledge, some of them threw it away, and in truth most of them do not believe.
- Ayah 101A messenger came confirming their own scripture, and some threw the Book of Allah behind their backs, acting as if they had never known it.
- Ayah 102They traded scripture for sorcery; Sulaymān never practised it, its harm reaches no one without Allah's permission, and its buyers sell themselves cheaply.
- Ayah 103Straight after the verdict, an open door: belief and mindfulness bring a lasting reward from Allah, and even a little of it is better.
- Ayah 104The first 'O you who believe' in the Mushaf teaches believers to choose words of respect, and then to truly listen.
- Ayah 105Some wish no good at all to reach the believers, but Allah singles out for His mercy whom He wills, and His bounty is vast.
- Ayah 106Whatever ruling Allah lifts or lets be forgotten, He replaces with something better or equal, knowing each change from the start.
- Ayah 107The heavens and the earth are Allah's, and besides Him there is no one who both owns your affairs and can rescue you.
- Ayah 108Ask to learn, not to corner your Messenger as Mūsā was cornered; whoever trades faith for disbelief has left the middle of the road.
- Ayah 109Many wished, out of envy, to pull the believers back from faith; the believers were told to pardon, overlook and leave the outcome to Allah.
- Ayah 110Pray, give, and send good ahead of you: every deed is stored with Allah, who sees all that you do.
- Ayah 111Claims that Paradise belongs to one group alone are wishes; the Quran answers them with a single fair request: bring your proof.
- Ayah 112Not a label but a surrender: whoever gives his whole self to Allah, and does it beautifully, has his reward with his Lord.
- Ayah 113Two communities, each reading a Book that confirms the other, said the other stood on nothing; the final verdict on their quarrel belongs to Allah.
- Ayah 114Whoever bars Allah's name from His places of worship, and works to ruin them by force or by emptying, does the greatest wrong.
- Ayah 115East and west both belong to Allah; wherever you turn as He directs, His Face is there, for He is Vast and knows every heart.
- Ayah 116Allah has no son: He owns everything in the heavens and earth, and every one of them stands before Him as a servant.
- Ayah 117He originated the heavens and the earth with no model before them, and whatever He decrees He simply tells to be, and it is.
- Ayah 118The demand that Allah speak directly or send a special sign is an old one; His signs are already clear to anyone seeking certainty.
- Ayah 119The Prophet ﷺ was sent with the truth, to give good news and to warn; those who refuse it are not his to answer for.
- Ayah 120Approval bought by leaving your path is never enough; hold to Allah's guidance, for following desire after knowledge leaves you unprotected.
- Ayah 121Those who recite the Book as it deserves, following where it leads, truly believe in it; whoever rejects it is the loser.
- Ayah 122The long address to the Children of Israel closes as it opened: remember My favour, and how I preferred you, and answer it now.
- Ayah 123The warning of 2:48 returns rearranged: on that Day no ransom is accepted, no intercession helps, and no one stands in for another.
- Ayah 124Ibrāhīm was tested and completed every test before he was made a leader; his line would share that trust, but never its wrongdoers.
- Ayah 125Allah made His House a place of return and safety, honoured Ibrāhīm's standing place, and charged him and his son to keep it pure.
- Ayah 126Ibrāhīm asked for a barren valley to become a safe, fed town for believers; Allah answered that His provision reaches even those who reject Him.
- Ayah 127Raising the House stone by stone, father and son asked one thing of their Lord, who hears and knows: accept it from us.
- Ayah 128At the height of their life's work, two prophets asked to be made more surrendered, to be shown how to worship, and to be forgiven.
- Ayah 129Ibrāhīm asked the Mighty, the Wise to send his descendants a messenger of their own, to recite, teach and purify; the answer came long after him.
- Ayah 130Only someone who makes a fool of his own self turns away from Ibrāhīm's way; Allah chose him here, and he is among the righteous hereafter.
- Ayah 131His Lord said 'Submit', and Ibrāhīm answered at once: it was already done, for the Lord of all the worlds.
- Ayah 132Ibrāhīm, and Yaʿqūb after him, left their sons one charge: Allah has chosen this religion for you, so let death find you only in submission.
- Ayah 133With death near, Yaʿqūb asked his sons what they would worship after him; they answered: your God, the God of your fathers, One God.
- Ayah 134The prophets' generation has passed: their deeds are theirs, yours are yours, and no one will be asked about what another did.
- Ayah 135To the claim that guidance comes by joining a camp, the answer is the way of Ibrāhīm: turned wholly to Allah, and never one who associated partners with Him.
- Ayah 136The believer's creed takes in every prophet: what came to us, to Ibrāhīm and his line, to Mūsā, to ʿĪsā and to all the prophets, with none set aside.
- Ayah 137Whoever believes as you believe is guided; whoever turns away has split off into opposition, and Allah, the Hearing, the Knowing, will be enough for you…
- Ayah 138Ours is the dye of Allah, finer than any other, and it is Him alone that we worship.
- Ayah 139No one owns Allah: He is our Lord and yours, each answers for their own deeds, and our part is to be sincere to Him.
- Ayah 140Allah knows best what Ibrāhīm and his sons were, none wrongs more than one who hides a testimony from Him, and nothing done escapes Him.
- Ayah 141The same words return to close the argument: that generation has gone to its Lord with its deeds, and you will be asked only about yours.
- Ayah 142Before the mockery came, Allah gave the answer: east and west are His, and He guides whom He wills to a straight path.
- Ayah 143Allah made this community a just middle, witnesses over humanity, tested it through the change of qibla, and lost none of its prayers, for He is most…
- Ayah 144Allah saw His Prophet's face turning again and again to the sky, and gave him the qibla he loved: the Sacred Mosque, faced from wherever believers are.
- Ayah 145Even every sign would not move those set against the new qibla; the Prophet would not follow theirs, and following desire after knowledge would be wrongdoing.
- Ayah 146Those given the Scripture knew the Prophet as surely as they knew their own sons, yet a party of them hid the truth they knew.
- Ayah 147The truth is what comes from your Lord, so do not settle among those who keep wavering over it.
- Ayah 148Every community has a direction it turns to, so race one another to good; wherever you are, Allah will bring you all together, and He has power over…
- Ayah 149From wherever you set out, turn your face towards the Sacred Mosque: it is the truth from your Lord, and Allah is not unaware of what you do.
- Ayah 150Face the Sacred Mosque from everywhere, so that no fair argument stands against you; fear not the wrongdoers but Allah, who completes His favour and guides.
- Ayah 151Ibrāhīm's prayer answered: a messenger from among you, reciting, purifying and teaching the Book, wisdom, and what you could never have known yourselves.
- Ayah 152Before you ever remembered Him, He had already remembered you; this ayah asks you to answer, and promises to answer back.
- Ayah 153Patience and prayer are not what you do when help has failed; they are how you ask for it, from One who stays.
- Ayah 154The ayah takes one word away from the grieving, 'dead', and gives them a truer one, with an honest note about what they cannot see.
- Ayah 155Hardship was promised in advance, in small measure, to the best of people, and the sentence that announces it ends in good news.
- Ayah 156Grief's first sentence, given by Allah: everything I call mine is His, and I am on my way back to Him.
- Ayah 157Those who said 'we belong to Allah' are answered: covered in His praise and mercy, and named the guided.
- Ayah 158Two small hills where a mother once ran for water are among Allah's marks, and the One who needs nothing thanks whoever walks them.
- Ayah 159Hiding guidance Allah has already made plain pushes people away from light, and pushes the one who hides it away too.
- Ayah 160Turn back, mend what you broke and bring out what you hid; then Allah speaks to you as 'I', the One who keeps turning back.
- Ayah 161The curse falls on those who reject the truth and die still rejecting it; while there is life, the last line is unwritten.
- Ayah 162Those who die rejecting get no lightening and no more waiting; the reprieve they lack then is the one we live in now.
- Ayah 163The One you are made to turn to is one, with no second and no like, and His oneness is wrapped in mercy.
- Ayah 164Sky, night and day, ships, rain, creatures, winds and clouds: eight everyday wonders, each a waymark pointing to the One God for anyone who thinks.
- Ayah 165Some give rivals the love owed to Allah alone; believers love Him more, and on the Day all borrowed power returns to Him.
- Ayah 166On the Day, the followed disown their followers, and every rope that held them together, tied for anything but Allah, is cut.
- Ayah 167The followers beg for one more turn to disown their leaders, but the chance has passed, and their own deeds stand before them as regrets.
- Ayah 168Allah opens the earth's table to all people: eat what is permitted and wholesome, and do not follow Satan one small step at a time.
- Ayah 169Satan's whole programme fits in one line: what ends in sorrow, what is ugly, and speaking for Allah without knowledge.
- Ayah 170Told to follow revelation, they say 'we follow our fathers', as if inheriting a belief were the same as knowing it is true.
- Ayah 171Like a flock that hears the shepherd's shout but not his words, those who refuse to listen hear revelation only as noise.
- Ayah 172The believers are invited to enjoy the good things Allah provides and to thank Him, because worshipping Him and thanking Him are one act.
- Ayah 173Allah forbids only a short list, and writes the exception for necessity into the law itself, because He is Forgiving and Merciful.
- Ayah 174Whoever hides Allah's word for a small price is eating fire, and on the Day meets the silence of the One he most needs.
- Ayah 175They traded guidance for error and forgiveness for punishment: two losing bargains, made with a boldness that astonishes.
- Ayah 176The Book came down with the truth; those who split it, taking some and leaving some, end up split apart and far from it.
- Ayah 177Righteousness is not a direction you face but a person you become: believing, giving what you love, keeping your word, holding firm.
- Ayah 178Allah limits retribution to the one who did the wrong, still calls him 'brother', and opens a door to pardon as a mercy.
- Ayah 179A measured, just response to killing protects life itself, and only minds stripped of their husks can see life inside such a hard law.
- Ayah 180Before death arrives, the God-conscious put their wealth in order with fairness, because what you leave behind is your last act of justice.
- Ayah 181Whoever changes a just will after hearing it carries the sin alone; the dead cannot object, but Allah heard every word.
- Ayah 182Whoever sees a will leaning, by mistake or on purpose, and sets it right between those involved does no wrong.
- Ayah 183Fasting is prescribed for the believers as for every people before them, and its goal is not hunger but taqwa: a guarded, awake heart.
- Ayah 184A handful of counted days, with room for the ill, the traveller and the frail; yet fasting is better for you.
- Ayah 185Ramadan is the month of the Quran; fast it, because Allah wants ease for you, a completed count, and hearts that magnify and thank Him.
- Ayah 186When you ask where He is, He does not send the answer through anyone; He gives it Himself: I am near, and I answer.
- Ayah 187Allah knew what was done in the dark and answered with pardon; spouses are each other's garment; His limits are kept well back from.
- Ayah 188A bribe or a false claim is a bucket let down into someone else's well; no verdict makes what it brings up yours.
- Ayah 189The changing moon is a calendar hung for everyone, and righteousness is not a ritual of your own making but a person mindful of Allah.
- Ayah 190The first permission to fight came with its brake attached: fight those who fight you, and do not transgress, for Allah does not love transgressors.
- Ayah 191Read whole, this ayah targets an enemy already at war, weighs persecution above killing, and keeps the Sanctuary off-limits unless attacked there.
- Ayah 192Even mid-war, Allah's door stays open: if they stop, He is Forgiving, Merciful, and the fighting stops too.
- Ayah 193Fighting has an end point, not an open horizon; once the other side stops, hostility is only for wrongdoers, and whoever keeps attacking becomes one.
- Ayah 194A wrong may be answered in its own measure and no more; pardon stays open, and Allah is with the mindful.
- Ayah 195Ruin is more often comfort, hoarding and despair than courage; so spend for Allah, do not hurl yourself into destruction, and do everything beautifully.
- Ayah 196Complete the pilgrimage for Allah alone; His law bends for illness, poverty and blocked roads, and no one's pilgrimage is second class.
- Ayah 197On the pilgrimage keep your tongue and temper; every unseen good is known to Allah, and the best provision is mindfulness of Him.
- Ayah 198Honest earning is bounty from your Lord, even on pilgrimage; and after ʿArafāt, remember the One who found you lost.
- Ayah 199Stand where everyone stands and move with everyone; there is no private enclosure before Allah, and after the greatest worship comes the plea for forgiveness.
- Ayah 200Replace boasting about ancestors with remembrance of Allah, constant as a child calling its parents; and beware prayers that ask only for this world.
- Ayah 201The prayer the Prophet ﷺ said most: good here, good hereafter, and a shield from the Fire; everything a human being needs.
- Ayah 202Those who ask for both worlds receive a share of what they earned; and Allah reckons every deed of every soul without delay or effort.
- Ayah 203Fill the counted days with remembrance; where Allah gives two good options, neither is a sin; every crowd rehearses the final gathering.
- Ayah 204Some words dazzle, are sworn on Allah's name, and hide a heart that will never turn; being impressed is not knowing.
- Ayah 205The smooth talker shows his truth when he leaves the room or gains power; he ruins fields and young, and Allah does not love ruin.
- Ayah 206A hardened heart shows itself in how it hears 'fear Allah': pride seizes it like a captor, and it digs deeper.
- Ayah 207Opposite the dazzling hypocrite stands one who sells himself for Allah's pleasure; the buyer is the Kind One, and the seller profits.
- Ayah 208Enter peace with your whole self, not one compartment of it; and watch the small steps, because ruin is reached one footstep at a time.
- Ayah 209If you slip after the proofs have reached you, remember the Almighty, whom none escapes, and the Wise, whose every rule has a reason.
- Ayah 210What is left to wait for, but the Day itself: Allah coming in canopies of cloud, the matter settled, everything returned to Him?
- Ayah 211Count the clear signs given to those before you; whoever trades Allah's gift for ingratitude meets a Lord severe in penalty.
- Ayah 212This world is dressed up to dazzle and its admirers mock the faithful; the mindful will stand above them, and Allah gives without counting.
- Ayah 213Humanity began as one; scripture came to settle disputes, not start them; rivalry divided people, and Allah guides whom He wills.
- Ayah 214Paradise is not reached without being shaken; even the Messenger cried 'When is Allah's help?', and the answer came: it is near.
- Ayah 215Asked what to give, the answer turns to whom: parents first, then kin, orphans, the poor and the stranded traveller.
- Ayah 216Some duties are hard and the Quran says so; what you dislike may be good for you, for Allah knows and you do not.
- Ayah 217Fighting in the sacred month is grave, and the ayah says so; persecution and expelling people from Allah's House are graver.
- Ayah 218Even those who believed, left everything and strove for Allah are described as hoping for His mercy, not owed it; and He is Forgiving, Merciful.
- Ayah 219Wine and gambling hold some benefit, but their harm is greater: the first step in a patient teaching; give from what is surplus, and reflect.
- Ayah 220Improve the affairs of orphans and share your table with them as brothers; Allah knows the spoiler from the improver, and chose ease over hardship.
- Ayah 221Choose a spouse for faith over what dazzles; every home is an invitation, and Allah invites to the Garden and to forgiveness.
- Ayah 222Menstruation is named honestly as a discomfort, not a curse: only intimacy pauses, while closeness, the table and the shared home remain.
- Ayah 223A wife is pictured as a cultivated field, tended and rested, where the future is sown; send good ahead, and remember you will meet Allah.
- Ayah 224Never lay Allah's name across the road to goodness: an oath must not become your excuse for withholding kindness, mindfulness or peacemaking.
- Ayah 225Allah does not count the oaths that slip off the tongue; He counts what the heart has earned, and He is Forgiving, Forbearing.
- Ayah 226An oath to withhold oneself from a wife is given a limit, not a licence: four months, then Allah's forgiveness for the one who returns.
- Ayah 227Divorce, if it comes, must be a settled resolve, not a word thrown in anger; Allah hears every word and knows every motive.
- Ayah 228After divorce comes a waiting that protects everyone, honesty where no one can check, return only for repair, and rights that run both ways.
- Ayah 229Keep with what is decent or release with excellence: there is no third way of trapping, and even a parting must be done beautifully.
- Ayah 230A third divorce is final, which gives weight to the first two; any later return needs an honest hope of keeping Allah's limits.
- Ayah 231Never use a lawful return as a weapon: the one who harms that way wrongs himself, and Allah, who counsels you, knows every motive.
- Ayah 232When a divorced couple decently agree to remarry, no guardian's pride may block them: Allah knows what is best, and we do not.
- Ayah 233Even when parents part, the child comes first: nursed with care, provided for fairly, decided for by consultation, and never used as a weapon.
- Ayah 234A widow's grief is given a shape, honoured but not a prison; when it is complete, her life is hers to resume with dignity.
- Ayah 235A hope of marriage may be hinted at honourably, never pressed on the grieving; Allah knows what you hold within, and He forgives.
- Ayah 236A marriage that ends before it begins still deserves a parting gift to mend the hurt, each giving by his means.
- Ayah 237Half is what is owed, but forgoing is nearer to mindfulness of Allah: in every parting, do not forget the graciousness between you.
- Ayah 238Amid the laws of marriage and parting, Allah turns us to prayer: guard every prayer, especially the middle one, and stand before Him in stillness.
- Ayah 239Prayer is never dropped, even in danger, walking or riding; and when safety returns, remember Allah as He taught you what you never knew.
- Ayah 240A widow is not to be turned out of her home in her grief; she is provided for, and free to stay or to go.
- Ayah 241Every divorced woman is owed a fair parting provision to ease a broken heart: not an optional kindness, but a duty on the mindful.
- Ayah 242After the long laws of marriage and parting, Allah says why He explained them so clearly: so that you may understand.
- Ayah 243Thousands fled death, died at one word from Allah and were given life again: no flight outruns Him, and His bounty deserves thanks.
- Ayah 244No one outruns death, so let no fear of it keep you from Allah's way; He hears every word and knows every motive.
- Ayah 245The One who holds and spreads all provision asks, gently, who will lend Him a goodly loan, and promises to return it many times over.
- Ayah 246The notables demanded a king and swore they would fight, yet when fighting was prescribed all but a few turned away; Allah knows.
- Ayah 247Allah chose Ṭālūt, a man without pedigree or wealth, for knowledge and strength; the notables protested their entitlement, but kingship is His to give.
- Ayah 248The sign of Ṭālūt's kingship was the Ark's return, carrying tranquillity from their Lord and the legacy of Musa and Harun.
- Ayah 249A thirsty army was tested at a river and most failed; the few who crossed knew that numbers do not decide, Allah's permission does.
- Ayah 250Facing a vast army in the open, the few asked their Lord for three things in order: patience poured out, feet made firm, and victory.
- Ayah 251By Allah's permission the few routed the many, a young Dawud killed Jālūt, and Allah keeps checking corruption through people.
- Ayah 252These stories are Allah's own signs, recited in truth to a Messenger who had read no books, and he is one of the sent.
- Ayah 253Allah raised some messengers above others; those after them fought despite clear proofs, and had He willed they would not have.
- Ayah 254Spend from what Allah has provided, now, before a Day with no trade, no friendship, and no intercession except by His leave.
- Ayah 255Every night sleep takes the watch from your hands; this ayah describes the One who was holding it all along, and who never once dozes.
- Ayah 256No one is forced into faith, for the road is clear; whoever drops false lords for Allah grips a handle that never cracks.
- Ayah 257Allah stays close to those who believe and leads them out of many darknesses into one light; every false patron leads the other way.
- Ayah 258A king claimed power over life and death, until Ibrahim asked him for one sunrise from the west.
- Ayah 259A man asked how a dead town could live again; Allah made him, his donkey and his food the answer.
- Ayah 260Ibrahim already believed, yet asked to see how the dead are raised so his heart could settle; Allah answered with four birds and a call.
- Ayah 261Spending in Allah's way is a seed that becomes seven ears with a hundred grains each, and the Vast, Knowing One multiplies further still.
- Ayah 262The gift that is given, then never mentioned and never used to wound, keeps its full reward with Allah, free of fear and grief.
- Ayah 263A kind word and a forgiving silence are better than charity that wounds; Allah needs no one's gift, and holds back from punishing.
- Ayah 264Charity done for show, or spoiled by reminders and hurt, is thin dust on a smooth rock: one downpour, and nothing is left.
- Ayah 265Giving for Allah's pleasure is a garden on high ground: a downpour doubles its fruit, a drizzle is enough, and the All-Seeing misses nothing.
- Ayah 266Picture a lifetime's garden burned in an instant, just as old age and helpless children make it everything; guard your deeds from that fate.
- Ayah 267Give from the good you have earned and grown, not from what you would only accept with your eyes half-shut; Allah needs none of it.
- Ayah 268Two voices make promises when you reach for your wallet: Satan promises poverty and urges the clenched fist; Allah promises forgiveness and bounty.
- Ayah 269Wisdom is Allah's gift to whom He wills, and whoever receives it has been given much good; only people of the kernel take heed.
- Ayah 270Allah knows every gift you give and every promise you make Him; those who do wrong will find no helpers.
- Ayah 271Open charity is good, but giving secretly to the poor is better and covers your faults; the One who knows every inner state sees it.
- Ayah 272Guiding hearts is Allah's work, not yours; give to anyone in need for His sake, and every good you spend returns to you in full.
- Ayah 273Seek out the poor whose dignity hides their need: the careless think them rich, but the attentive know them by their marks.
- Ayah 274Those who give by night and by day, in secret and in the open, whenever need appears, have their reward with their Lord.
- Ayah 275Those who feed on ribā rise staggering; they call it trade, but Allah permitted trade, forbade ribā, and left the door back open.
- Ayah 276Allah makes ribā wane like the moon and makes charity grow like a nurtured foal; He does not love the ungrateful who persist in sin.
- Ayah 277Amid the warning against ribā stands another way to live: faith, good deeds, upright prayer and zakāh, with a reward that cannot be lost.
- Ayah 278Believers must be mindful of Allah and let go of whatever ribā is still owed them: the proof that their faith is real.
- Ayah 279Persist in ribā and you are at war with Allah and His Messenger; turn back and you keep your capital, neither wronging nor wronged.
- Ayah 280If a debtor is in hardship, wait until things ease for him; and if you let the debt go as charity, that is better still.
- Ayah 281Guard yourselves against a Day when you are returned to Allah, and every soul is paid in full for what it earned, wronged by nothing.
- Ayah 282The Quran's longest ayah asks believers to record their debts fairly so trust outlives memory, ending: be mindful of Allah; Allah teaches you.
- Ayah 283Without a scribe, a pledge will do; where people trust each other, the trusted must deliver in full; and no witness may hide the truth.
- Ayah 284All in the heavens and earth is Allah's, and so is what lies within you; shown or hidden, He reckons it, forgiving whom He wills.
- Ayah 285These are words frightened believers first said on their knees, and Allah sent them back as Quran with their own voices still in them.
- Ayah 286Allah measures what He asks of you with room to spare, teaches you to ask for the rest, and answers each request.
