Al-Baqarah 2:246
“Have you not considered the assembly of the Children of Israel after [the time of] Moses when they said to a prophet of theirs, "Send to us a king, and we will fight in the way of Allāh"? He said, "Would you perhaps refrain from fighting if battle was prescribed for you?" They said, "And why should we not fight in the cause of Allāh when we have been driven out from our homes and from our children?" But when battle was prescribed for them, they turned away, except for a few of them. And Allāh is Knowing of the wrongdoers.”

Essence
The notables demanded a king and swore they would fight, yet when fighting was prescribed all but a few turned away; Allah knows.
A reflection
He knew before they turned
The ayah ends with a quiet sentence that carries the weight of the whole story: 'And Allah knows the wrongdoers'. A modern commentary explains: those who break their pledges. They had made a promise loudly. He had known all along which of them would keep it.
What they said sounded unanswerable. Why would we not fight in the way of Allah, they said, when we have been driven from our homes and our children? Every word was true. The grievance was real; the children had really been taken. And yet, when the moment came, they turned away.
This is majesty that measures us not by our speeches but by our follow-through. The ego is very comfortable with declarations. It feels brave while making them. It even feels righteous. The ayah moves straight from the declaration to the outcome, and then reminds us Who was watching both.
It is a humbling thought for anyone who has ever said 'I would never'. I would never abandon my principles. I would never leave my friend. I would never be silent. Allah knows which of those sentences are true of us, before the day that tests them.
Does Allah need us to acknowledge His knowledge? He is the Free of need (35:15). We need to remember it. It turns our loud promises into quiet prayers: O Allah, make me one of the few.
