Al-Baqarah 2:265

“And the example of those who spend their wealth seeking means to the approval of Allāh and assuring [reward for] themselves is like a garden on high ground which is hit by a downpour - so it yields its fruits in double. And [even] if it is not hit by a downpour, then a drizzle [is sufficient]. And Allāh, of what you do, is Seeing.”

Essence

Giving for Allah's pleasure is a garden on high ground: a downpour doubles its fruit, a drizzle is enough, and the All-Seeing misses nothing.

A reflection

About a thousand, said the man at dinner

At a dinner party, a man mentions he gave 'about a thousand' to the earthquake appeal. His bank statement says three hundred and forty. Nobody at the table will ever check.

The ayah ends: 'And Allah sees what you do'. After two parables about giving, this is the last word. The previous ayah described the show-off who spends 'to be seen by people'. This one closes on the only Seer who matters. Baṣīr: One who sees the outward and the inward. A modern commentary puts it so: He sees the hidden and the visible, and rewards each giver by his sincerity.

That is where the ego is quietly cut down to size. We are all tempted to manage how our giving looks. We round up in conversation and round down on forms. We mention the large gift and forget the small refusal. We polish the story. None of it reaches Him. He sees the real figure, and the real heart behind it.

This is not a threat to the sincere. It is a relief. The person who gave three hundred and forty quietly, with a clean heart, has nothing to manage. The gift is seen exactly as it was. No inflation is needed, and none would help.

Someone may ask whether a God who announces that He watches is simply controlling. But consider the alternative. A world where only people see is a world where performance wins. Allah's seeing is what makes sincerity worth anything. He gains nothing from watching. He is free of all need (35:15).

The man at dinner could still correct himself. 'Actually, it was less. I wish it had been more'. The One who sees would see that too.
