Taha 20:104
نَّحْنُ أَعْلَمُ بِمَا يَقُولُونَ إِذْ يَقُولُ أَمْثَلُهُمْ طَرِيقَةً إِن لَّبِثْتُمْ إِلَّا يَوْمًا
“We are most knowing of what they say when the best of them in manner [i.e., wisdom or speech] will say, "You remained not but one day."”
Saheeh International
Essence
Allah hears every whispered estimate, and the shrewdest of them shrinks a whole lifetime to a single day.
A reflection
No whisper is private
We know best what they say. The people in the previous ayah were whispering, leaning in so that only their neighbours could hear. Allah's response is to say, calmly: We know exactly what they are saying.
A concise modern commentary expands it: We know best what they say and what they keep secret. Another: We know best what they whisper to one another; nothing of it escapes Us. A narration-based commentary: nothing of what they whisper among themselves is hidden from Us.
The ego relies heavily on privacy. We say one thing in public and another in the car. We share opinions with a trusted friend that we would never put in writing. Picture a senior manager who, in the corridor after a meeting, mutters something cutting about a junior colleague. He has said it quietly, to one person, with the door shut. Then he discovers the conference microphone was still on, and the whole department heard. His face goes white. Nothing he said was louder than a whisper. All of it was heard.
The ayah describes a far more complete hearing. Not a microphone left on by accident, but the knowledge of the One who encompasses all things (20:98). Every whispered excuse, every private estimate, every sentence we thought was only for a friend, is known.
Some find this oppressive, as though Allah were boasting of surveillance. But a boast seeks admiration, and He needs none. This knowledge is told to us for our sake. It cuts the ego down to its proper size, the size of a creature who has never once been unheard. And it carries comfort too. The prayer whispered at night, the hurt no one else noticed, the good intention nobody saw, are known just as completely. Humility is simply living as someone who is always heard.
