Al-Ma'arij 70:4

“The angels and the Spirit [i.e., Gabriel] will ascend to Him during a Day the extent of which is fifty thousand years.”

Saheeh International

Essence

Angels, and one named apart in honour, rise through a day so vast that fifty thousand of our years fit inside it.

A reflection

Named apart, on purpose

The ayah could, very easily, have simply said that the angels ascend, and left it there. Instead it separates out one figure by name and lists him beside the whole category he already belongs to: the angels, and the Spirit. Commentators read this as deliberate, a known Arabic pattern of naming something specific right after the general group that already contains it, purely to mark it out for honour. Jibril, most hold, is meant here, singled out from the angels precisely because of how much he carries: he is the one entrusted with revelation, the one who brought the Quran itself down to the Prophet ﷺ.

It is worth noticing how this small grammatical choice works against a very modern instinct, the instinct to flatten everyone into one undifferentiated list so that no one feels singled out. The Quran does the opposite here without apology. It lists a whole category, then names one member of it who deserves to be mentioned again, because the work he does within that category is simply not identical to everyone else's.

An office works the same way, honestly, whatever the official policy says about treating every role as interchangeable. A team has an engineer who quietly built the system everyone else now relies on without a second thought, and it is not unfair, only true, when a manager mentions her by name in a report that otherwise just says "the engineering team." Being part of a larger group was never a reason to stay unnamed within it, and the ayah models exactly the gesture a good leader learns to make: honour the whole team, and still say the one name that earned it.
