Taha 20:129

وَلَوْلَا كَلِمَةٌ سَبَقَتْ مِن رَّبِّكَ لَكَانَ لِزَامًا وَأَجَلٌ مُّسَمًّى

“And if not for a word[866] that preceded from your Lord, it [i.e., punishment] would have been an obligation [due immediately],[867] and [if not for] a specified term [decreed].”

Essence

Only a word spoken beforehand and a date already set hold back the clamp from the wrongdoer: the delay is His, not their escape.

A reflection

The word that went ahead of us all

Kalimatun sabaqat: a word that went ahead. The verb comes from the racecourse. The lexicons say the root means going ahead, and its home was the horse race. Riders were sent off together; the first to the line took the stake. A saying that 'went ahead of you' was one spoken before you arrived.

So the ayah says: before any of these people acted, a word of Allah had already gone ahead of them. It had settled how He would deal with them. The commentaries name it. One says: it is His rule not to punish anyone until the proof has been set before them. Another: a promise to defer their recompense to the Hereafter.

This is where the ego has to sit down. We like to think we set the pace. We demand that wrongs be punished now, that prayers be answered by Friday, that the world run to our timetable.

Picture the chief executive of a large company who expects every customer complaint resolved within the hour. His staff jump when he walks past. At home on a Sunday morning, he stands drumming his fingers while the kettle boils, irritated that even water will not hurry for him.

That is the pride the ayah quietly dismantles. The timing of reckoning, of mercy, of every outcome, was settled by a word that went ahead of all of us. We arrive in a race whose stakes were laid before we were born. Our impatience changes nothing except our own peace.

Does Allah need to explain His timing to us? He does not; He is the Lord, and the word is His. Yet He tells us that the word exists, so that we can rest in it. The humble heart finds relief there. It is not in charge of the clock, and it does not need to be.
