Taha 20:50
قَالَ رَبُّنَا ٱلَّذِىٓ أَعْطَىٰ كُلَّ شَىْءٍ خَلْقَهُۥ ثُمَّ هَدَىٰ
“He said, "Our Lord is He who gave each thing its form and then guided [it]."”
Saheeh International
Essence
Asked who his Lord is, Musa points to everything around him: the One who gave each thing its form, then guided it.
A reflection
Nothing in you was self-taught
A father sits in a hospital room watching his daughter, a few hours old. No one has taught her anything. Yet when she is laid on her mother's chest, she turns her head, searches, and finds what she needs. He finds he is crying, and he is not sure why.
One classical commentator lists exactly that among the meanings of this ayah: He guided the young to their mothers' breasts. Pharaoh had asked, mockingly, who is this Lord of yours? Musa answered: rabbunā lladhī aʿṭā kulla shayʾin khalqahu thumma hadā. Our Lord is the One who gave each thing its form, then guided it.
Pharaoh's claim to lordship rested on having raised Musa. Musa's answer reaches back behind every upbringing. Before anyone fed you, someone gave you the body that could be fed and the instinct to seek food. Before anyone taught you, someone gave you the mind that could learn.
That is how majesty humbles the ego. Look at whatever you are proud of. Your intelligence, your skill, your looks, your strength. Each rests on a form you did not design and an inner guidance you did not install. You developed them, perhaps. You did not originate them.
The lexicons give the word khalq a craftsman's picture. A leatherworker spreads a hide and, before a single cut, measures it: this much for a water-skin, this much for a boot. That measuring is khalq. Every creature was measured before it was made.
Is this self-praise from Allah, demanding admiration? He needs nothing from us (35:15). The answer was given to Pharaoh for Pharaoh's sake, and to us for ours. It frees us from the exhausting pretence of being self-made. We were measured, made and guided. The right response is not pride. It is gratitude.
