Essence

The question that opens Musa's story in 79:15 opens it here too, leading into the fullest telling of that story in the Quran.

A reflection

Why Musa, and why now

This question is treated in full at 79:15. Here it arrives at a particular moment. The surah has just told the Prophet ﷺ that the Quran was not sent to exhaust him. Now it turns to a story.

One classical theologian explains the choice. Having honoured the Quran and the Messenger's task, Allah follows with what strengthens his heart: the stories of earlier prophets. And He begins with Musa, because his trial and testing were the greatest. A man who was told 'you will not be wretched' is now shown a prophet who faced Pharaoh, and was not crushed.

Another commentator adds a second purpose. The Prophet's people had mocked him and called him wretched. This story shows him that his brothers among the prophets met the same from their peoples, and the outcome was theirs.

Think of a newly qualified teacher after a disastrous lesson. Her head of department does not lecture her. He sits on a desk in the empty classroom and says: let me tell you about my first year. The story does what advice cannot.

When your task feels heavier than you, read Musa's story in Taha slowly. It was first given to a tired man who needed it.
