Taha 20:14

“Indeed, I am Allāh. There is no deity except Me, so worship Me and establish prayer for My remembrance.”

Essence

Musa's first lesson was truth before power: I am Allah, no god but Me, so worship Me and pray to remember Me.

A reflection

Truth before tools

Musa is about to be given astonishing things. A staff that becomes a living snake. A hand that shines. A mission to the most powerful king on earth. But before any of it, he is taught one sentence: indeed, I am Allah; there is no god except Me.

One commentator calls this the first duty on every accountable person: to know that there is no god but Allah, alone, without partner. Musa's training does not begin with technique or strategy. It begins with who God is.

There is a humbling order in that. We tend to want the tools first. Give me the method, the plan, the platform, the power, and then I will think about the big questions. Many people build entire careers before asking whom they finally serve.

The ayah reverses the order, and in doing so it cuts the ego down to size. A man about to hold miracles in his hands must first be told that he is not God. Nor is anything he will face. Not Pharaoh, not the magicians, not the sea. Without that knowledge, power corrupts. With it, power becomes service.

Notice too who teaches the sentence. Not an angel, not a book, not a teacher. Allah Himself, speaking in the first person: no god but I. The One who alone has the right to that 'I' uses it to free a man from every other master.

Someone may object that a God who says 'worship Me' must be needy. But nothing here is for Allah's benefit. He gains nothing from Musa's knowledge, and nothing from ours. He gives the knowledge so that the one who receives it will never bow to anything less.

Before you reach for any new tool this week, say the sentence slowly: there is no god but Allah. Let it set the order of everything else.
