Al-Anbya 21:101
إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ سَبَقَتْ لَهُم مِّنَّا ٱلْحُسْنَىٰٓ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ عَنْهَا مُبْعَدُونَ
“Indeed, those for whom the best [reward] has preceded from Us - they are from it far removed.”
Saheeh International
Essence
Before any deed of theirs, the best had already gone ahead for them from Allah; such people are kept far from the Fire.
A reflection
Grace runs ahead of you
Sabaqat lahum minnā al-ḥusnā: for them the best has gone before, from Us. Every word of the phrase places the initiative with Allah.
The verb sabaqa comes from racing. The lexicons picture horses let loose together, each rider straining to be first to the line. Here what runs ahead is not the believer. It is al-ḥusnā, the best, and it comes minnā, from Us. One classical commentator explains it as happiness decreed for them from eternity. Another lists the options: happiness, glad tidings of reward, or being given success in obedience. In every reading, the good arrives first, and it arrives from Him.
That is humbling. We tend to tell our stories of faith as achievement: I started praying, I changed, I worked hard. All true. But this ayah says that before any of it, Allah's goodness had already set out towards us.
Picture a boy of twelve, adopted at three, who finds a blue folder at the back of his parents' wardrobe. Inside are two years of paperwork from before he came home. Training courses they attended. A sketch of the bedroom they planned for him. A list of names. A letter addressed to him, written before they had ever met him. He sits on the floor for a long time. He had thought his story began when he arrived. It had been running towards him for years.
The ego wants to be the first mover in its own salvation. The ayah gently corrects it. You did not begin this. You were met. Any good you do is a response to a goodness that ran ahead of you.
Allah gains nothing from having gone first. He went first because that is what He is like.
