Al-Anbya · Makki · ayah 30 of 112
Al-Anbya 21:30
“Have those who disbelieved not considered that the heavens and the earth were a joined entity, and then We separated them and made from water every living thing? Then will they not believe?”
Saheeh International
Essence
Heaven and earth were sealed like a stitched seam until He opened them; from water He made every living thing.
A reflection
Opened for the ones who would live here
A narration-based commentary opens its reading of this ayah with one sentence. Allah is drawing attention to His complete power and His great authority over all He has made. Then it lets the ayah speak. The heavens and the earth were sealed shut, and He split them apart.
The commentaries preserve a report about this ayah. A man came to Ibn ʿUmar asking what it meant, and was sent to ask an elderly scholar of the Quran instead. The answer he brought back was this. The heavens were sealed and gave no rain; the earth was sealed and grew nothing. Then, when Allah created inhabitants for the earth, He opened the sky with rain and the earth with plants. Hearing it, Ibn ʿUmar said that the old scholar had truly been given knowledge of the Quran. One commentator notes that the report was judged authentic by a classical hadith master.
Notice the turning point in that answer: when He created inhabitants for the earth. The sky was not opened for its own sake. It was opened for the ones who would live here. Every shower that has ever fallen on your street is that opening, renewed.
Picture an engineer standing on the walkway of a great dam. At his signal the sluice gates open and a river thunders out into the valley. He feels, for a moment, enormously powerful. Then a thought arrives uninvited. Every drop behind that wall fell first as rain he did not make, from clouds he did not gather, onto hills he did not raise. He controls a gate. He could not produce a single drop of what flows through it.
That is where the ayah wants our pride to stand. We manage the water; we did not open the sky. A sceptic might hear the ayah as a deity reminding people of its power so that they will praise it. But the commentaries read the opening as a gift to the creatures, not a display for their applause. One classical commentator suggests the sealed state served the angels' good, and the opening served the good of His servants. He needs nothing from the rain. We need everything.
