Al-Anbya 21:40
بَلْ تَأْتِيهِم بَغْتَةً فَتَبْهَتُهُمْ فَلَا يَسْتَطِيعُونَ رَدَّهَا وَلَا هُمْ يُنظَرُونَ
“Rather, it will come to them unexpectedly and bewilder them, and they will not be able to repel it, nor will they be reprieved.”
Saheeh International
Essence
It will not come at a time they choose: it will arrive suddenly, leave them speechless, and allow no turning back and no delay.
A reflection
No dust on the horizon
Bal taʾtīhim baghtatan: no, it will come upon them suddenly. The mockers had asked for a date: when is this promise? The answer is that there will be no date to see coming. A narration-based commentary says it plainly. It will not come at a time they know. It will take them unawares, when they do not feel it approaching.
The lexicons give baghta almost no picture beyond the startle itself: a thing meeting you from where you were not reckoning on it. But one lexicon illustrates it with a frontier town, where nobody is ever safe from the enemy's arrival unannounced. Another records a related word for a man so taken aback that he cannot see his way. These are established senses. The first hearers would have pictured a border settlement where raiders appear at the gate with no dust seen on the horizon.
Picture a family having a barbecue in a garden on a bright afternoon. The children are in the paddling pool, the radio is on. Nobody looks at the sky. Within five minutes it turns black and a hailstorm hammers the garden, scattering plates and sending everyone sprinting indoors. Afterwards, soaked and laughing, the father admits the forecast had warned of storms. He simply had not believed they would come today.
That is the difference between warning and timing. The warning had been given clearly. The timing was not. And the two together are exactly the condition the ayah describes. The Hour has been announced for centuries. Its moment has never been.
The lexicon adds a final, telling saying: there is no judgement to be had from a man in that state of shock. The time for thinking clearly is before the raiders reach the gate. That is why the warning comes now.
