Al-Baqarah 2:258

“Have you not considered the one who argued with Abraham about his Lord [merely] because Allāh had given him kingship? When Abraham said, "My Lord is the one who gives life and causes death," he said, "I give life and cause death." Abraham said, "Indeed, Allāh brings up the sun from the east, so bring it up from the west." So the disbeliever was overwhelmed [by astonishment], and Allāh does not guide the wrongdoing people.”

Essence

A king claimed power over life and death, until Ibrahim asked him for one sunrise from the west.

A reflection

Two names on a spreadsheet, and the sun

In a restructuring, a director looks at two names on a spreadsheet. One person keeps her job; one does not. By the evening he feels something he would never admit aloud. It is close to feeling like a god.

Ibrahim said, 'My Lord is the One who gives life and causes death'. The king answered, 'I give life and cause death'. The commentators explain what he meant. Two condemned men were brought in. He had one killed and spared the other. A classical commentator adds that this was no real answer. It was a pretence, made out of stubbornness, to claim the station for himself.

That is the ego's oldest trick. It confuses deciding outcomes with being the source of life. The king could end a life. He could not make one. The director can end a job. He did not make the person who held it.

So Ibrahim moved to ground no one could fake. 'Allah brings the sun from the east. So bring it from the west'. A modern commentary frames it as a challenge to change a pattern set by God. No decree, army or spreadsheet reaches that far. The sunrise is not negotiable.

Someone may ask whether this is God showing off: winning a debate by pointing at His power. But notice who needed the lesson. A man was ruling people through fear by claiming divine power. Exposing the claim freed them, not God. Allah gains nothing from winning arguments. He is free of all need (35:15).

Every morning, the sun rises in the east without consulting any of us. It is a daily reminder of where our power stops. Watch one sunrise this week and let it put you back to your proper size.
