Al-Anbya 21:54

قَالَ لَقَدْ كُنتُمْ أَنتُمْ وَءَابَآؤُكُمْ فِى ضَلَـٰلٍ مُّبِينٍ

“He said, "You were certainly, you and your fathers, in manifest error."”

Essence

Ibrahim refused to let the revered dead excuse the living: an error does not become a road because many generations have walked inside it.

A reflection

Like milk lost in water

Fī ḍalālin mubīn: in clear error. The root's first picture is a traveller who has lost the road to his goal. But the lexicons add a domestic image that the first hearers knew from every kitchen. Ḍalla al-laban fī al-māʾ: the milk was lost in the water. It disappeared into it and could no longer be found. Being lost, vanishing and bewilderment, one lexicon says, are a single experience seen from three sides.

That image fits Ibrahim's words closely. One commentator notes that he said "in error", not simply "erring". The preposition puts them inside it, surrounded, as milk is surrounded by water. And not only them: "you and your fathers". Whole generations had poured themselves into the same practice until no one could tell where the people ended and the error began.

Picture a walker in a large pine plantation in late afternoon. Her phone has died. Every row of trees looks exactly like every other row: same trunks, same needles underfoot, same grey light. She walks confidently for an hour and arrives back at the same felled log. She was never standing still. She was moving steadily, inside something that had no landmarks.

That is the frightening thing about ḍalāl. It does not feel like being lost while you are in it. It feels like walking. The rows look ordered. Everyone around you is walking too.

Ibrahim's sentence is a landmark set down in the middle of the plantation. It says: you have been walking in a circle, and so did those before you. That is not an insult. It is the first piece of information a lost person needs. Without it, every hour of confident walking only deepens the circle.
