Al-Anbya · Makki · ayah 94 of 112
Al-Anbya 21:94
“So whoever does righteous deeds while he is a believer - no denial will there be for his effort,[905] and indeed We [i.e., Our angels], of it, are recorders.”
Saheeh International
Essence
Whoever does some of the good, believing, will find no part of the effort buried or denied, because Allah Himself is writing it down.
A reflection
The King who keeps the ledger
Wa-innā lahu kātibūn: and We, for it, are writers. Pause on who is speaking. The One who owns the heavens and the earth has just told of floods, fires and prophets. Now He says: We are writing down your effort.
One commentator explains it as Allah commanding the recording angels to write. Another draws out the consequence. Whatever We record, he says, is not lost, and its doer is rewarded. The ayah does not promise that someone might notice. It says the record is already being made, by the highest authority there is.
This turns our usual instinct upside down. We tend to keep our own ledger of good deeds, quietly, in the head. I visited my aunt. I gave to that appeal. I prayed on time all week. Part of us wants someone else to see the ledger too.
Picture an eight-year-old who keeps a notebook of every chore he does for a month: emptied the bin, fed the cat, carried the shopping. On the last day he presents it to his mother, hoping for a reward. She smiles, opens a drawer, and takes out her own notebook. In it are the kind things he did without noticing. He shared his last biscuit. He sat with his sick sister. Her list is longer, and better, than his.
The ego wants its good deeds witnessed and praised. This ayah removes the need. The witness is already there, and the record is in better hands than yours. Allah needs none of your deeds; He is writing them for your sake, not His. So you can stop keeping score in your head. The book is being kept.
