Al-Hajj · Madani · ayah 54 of 78
Al-Hajj 22:54
“And so those who were given knowledge may know that it is the truth from your Lord and [therefore] believe in it, and their hearts humbly submit to it. And indeed is Allāh the Guide of those who have believed to a straight path.”

Essence
The test that shook the sick and the hard lets people of knowledge see the truth, believe it, and settle low before it.
A reflection
Knowing, then trusting, then resting
Look at the chain of verbs in this ayah. They know, and so they believe, and so their hearts humble themselves. Each step is joined by fa, a small Arabic link that means 'and so, as a result'. Knowledge is not the last stop. It is meant to flow down into faith, and faith down into a heart that settles.
Picture a father taking his children across a frozen lake in a cold winter. Before setting out, he reads the safety charts. He knows how thick the ice must be, and he has checked the reading. That is knowledge. Then he steps onto the ice. That is trust: acting on what he knows. For the first hundred metres he tests every step, heel first. Then, somewhere in the middle, he stops testing. He simply walks, and starts talking to the children about the hills. That is the third stage: the body at rest on what the mind already knew.
Many of us live at the first stage. We know a great deal about Allah. We can explain His mercy and quote the ayat on His care. But the heart has not yet stopped testing every step. It still braces for the ice to break.
The ayah describes people whose knowledge did its full work. They saw the truth, it deepened their faith, and their hearts came to rest. One concise commentary glosses tukhbita simply as taṭmaʾinn, to be at peace.
That is also why the casting in the previous ayah did not shake them. A heart resting on the truth does not panic when a stray voice shouts. It has crossed enough of the lake to know the ice holds.
Ask where your own knowledge is stuck. Is there something you know about Allah that has not yet become trust? Is there trust that has not yet become rest? The ayah suggests the way forward is not more facts alone. It is letting what you already know carry your weight.
