Al-Hajj 22:53

“[That is] so He may make what Satan throws in [i.e., asserts] a trial for those within whose hearts is disease[934] and those hard of heart. And indeed, the wrongdoers are in extreme dissension.”

Saheeh International

Essence

Whatever Satan casts, Allah turns into a fire that shows what each heart was made of: the sick heart wavers, the hard heart hardens further.

A reflection

The enemy does not get to decide what his work means

The ayah opens with a small particle that carries enormous weight: li, 'so that'. The previous ayah described Satan casting something into a prophet's recitation or hope. This one does not begin with Satan's purpose. It begins with Allah's. So that He may make what Satan casts a trial.

Satan does the casting. Allah does the making. The most cunning enemy in creation works hard, and his work is then picked up and used for a purpose he never chose.

Picture a fraud unit at a large bank. Over years it seizes thousands of counterfeit notes. The forgers meant them to cheat. The bank keeps a drawer of the best fakes and uses them to train new tellers. Every forger's careful work now teaches people to spot forgeries. He laboured, and his labour serves the other side.

That is a small picture of something far larger. Satan is not a rival power standing level with Allah. He is a creature whose every move falls inside a plan he cannot see the edges of. A classical scholar of the heart calls this lām the particle of wisdom and purpose. What Satan threw became a test, and the test separated hearts.

This should shrink a particular kind of pride. We often imagine ourselves as authors of our own stories, steering events by cleverness. If the enemy of mankind cannot fix the meaning of his own schemes, how much less can we? Our plans run inside Allah's wisdom, not beside it.

It also shrinks a quieter vanity: the belief that evil has the last word. The ayah does not deny that evil is real or that it does damage. It says evil does not get to write the ending. The next ayah shows what the same event produced in hearts of knowledge: certainty and humility.

Does Allah need such a test to learn who we are? No. He knows already, and He needs neither our passing nor our praise. The test is for us: it shows each heart to itself, and makes the reward and the reckoning just.

So when something ugly is thrown into your life, ask two questions. What did the thrower intend? And what is Allah making of it? The second question is the one that lasts.
