Al-Mu'minun 23:32
“And We sent among them a messenger[952] from themselves, [saying], "Worship Allāh; you have no deity other than Him; then will you not fear Him?"”

Essence
A messenger raised among his own people brings them Nuh's words exactly: worship Allah, you have no god but Him; will you not guard yourselves?
A reflection
Gods behind glass
A museum has a case of small stone figures. The labels read: god of rain, goddess of harvest, protector of the city. A class of schoolchildren files past eating crisps. Nobody stops. Once, whole cities trembled before these figures, brought them food and begged them for children.
The messenger's message has two parts. Worship Allah. Then the reason: mā lakum min ilāhin ghayruh, you have no god other than Him. The commentators explain it as: you have no one worthy of worship besides Him. The wording is absolute. Not merely no other god, but not a single one of any kind.
The word ilāh has several pictures in the commentaries, each held as a view. The Arabs said alihtu ilā someone when they found rest in him, or fled to him in fear. Another line ties it to walah: turning in need, as a child turns to its mother. Walah is also the bewilderment of a mind before something too great to grasp. So an ilāh is whatever the heart rests in, runs to and is overwhelmed by.
That is why the stone figures are a mirror, not a curiosity. Our generation does not carve idols. But hearts still run somewhere first, and rest somewhere last. For one person it is approval. For another, money, health, a child or a career. These do not sit in museum cases. They sit in our chests.
The ayah humbles every one of them. They are not gods. They cannot give rest or protection, because none of them is the One who made the heart.
And it humbles our pride most of all. Some of us have quietly placed ourselves at the centre: our own judgement, our own comfort, our own name. The messenger's sentence leaves no room for that idol either.
Notice tomorrow where your heart runs first when something goes wrong. Bring it back to the only One who has room for it.
