Fatir · Makki · ayah 24 of 45
Fatir 35:24
“Indeed, We have sent you with the truth as a bringer of good tidings and a warner. And there was no nation but that there had passed within it a warner.”
Saheeh International
Essence
He was sent with the truth, good news first, and no people in any age has been left without someone to warn them.
A reflection
Reason can warn; only revelation brings good news
The ayah names two roles, then repeats only one. We sent you as a bringer of good news and a warner. Then: there is no people but a warner passed among it. Where did the good news go?
The commentators give two answers, and the second is remarkable. The first is simple: warning always comes paired with good news, so naming one implies the other. The second is put forward as one view. Warning can reach people through revelation and through reason. Good news can only come through revelation.
Think about why that might be true. Picture a hiker caught on a moor as the light goes and the rain turns to sleet. His body warns him without anyone's help. He shivers, his fingers stop working, his thoughts slow. Every instinct says: danger, get down. But no instinct tells him there is a stone hut with a stove just over the next ridge. Only the map someone gave him that morning can tell him that.
Conscience is like the shivering. It can tell a person that cruelty is wrong, that greed corrodes, that something is badly off. Many peoples have known this without a scripture. But conscience cannot tell you that Allah forgives, that a door is open, that a Garden is waiting. That news has to be brought.
This is why the messengers matter so much. Human wisdom can produce a long list of warnings. It cannot produce a single promise from beyond the grave.
The word for good news, bashīr, comes from a root the lexicons tie to the skin of the face. Good news is news that shows. And the news of His mercy is the one kind no human mind could have generated for itself.
