Maryam 19:95

وَكُلُّهُمْ ءَاتِيهِ يَوْمَ ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ فَرْدًا

“And all of them are coming to Him on the Day of Resurrection alone.”

Saheeh International

Essence

Every creature will arrive before Him on the Day of Resurrection alone, without retinue or wealth, and with no interpreter between them and their Lord.

A reflection

No retinue on that Day

And every one of them will come to Him on the Day of Resurrection alone. The them is everyone the previous two ayat named: all in the heavens and the earth, each counted.

A narration-based commentary describes what alone means. No helper and no protector except Allah, alone, without partner. He judges among His creation as He wills. And He is the Just, who does not wrong anyone by the weight of an atom.

A legal commentary adds the other loss. No wealth with him to benefit him, it says, and quotes another surah. The Day when neither wealth nor sons will benefit, except one who comes to Allah with a sound heart (26:88 to 89). Nothing helps him then except what he sent ahead.

Think about how much of human status is a retinue. A king arrives with guards. A chief executive arrives with assistants. A celebrity arrives with a camera crew. Even ordinary people build small retinues: a circle of friends who agree with them, a family name, a following. Much of what we call importance is simply never walking into a room by ourselves.

This ayah removes every retinue at once. The king walks in alone. So does the person who carried his bags. So does everyone they ever worshipped or obeyed.

That is where the ego has nowhere to hide. Every support it leaned on has been left at the door. What remains is a single servant, counted and known, standing before the One who needs no retinue, and never did.
