Al-Mu'minun 23:65

لَا تَجْـَٔرُوا۟ ٱلْيَوْمَ ۖ إِنَّكُم مِّنَّا لَا تُنصَرُونَ

“Do not cry out today. Indeed, by Us you will not be helped.”

Saheeh International

Essence

There comes a day when the cry for help is answered only with silence, because all help was only ever from Him.

A reflection

Rain that only one sky can send

A man's car breaks down on a remote moor at dusk. He scrolls through four hundred contacts. Friends, colleagues, a cousin who owes him a favour. None of them can reach him tonight.

Innakum minnā lā tunṣarūn: you will not be helped by Us. The lexicons give naṣr an established and lovely picture. The Arabs said rain naṣara the earth: it reached the land and watered it until it grew. A rained-on land was manṣūra. The streams that ran from far off into a valley and swelled its flood were called nawāṣir, helpers.

So help, at its root, is rain arriving on dry ground. It comes from above. You cannot manufacture it.

One commentator points out what minnā carries. Their crying out was not to anyone else. It was to Allah. So the answer is that no help will reach them from Us. The only sky that could rain has closed.

Two concise commentaries widen it. You cannot help yourselves, and no one else will help you against Allah's punishment. You will not be protected.

That is the deepest humbling of the ego. Pride assumes help is something it can summon. It has contacts, allies, money, insurance. It believes rescue can always be arranged. But every form of help on that list was rain from the same sky. When the sky withholds, the contacts are just names.

Allah gains nothing from withholding. He is the Rich, free of all need (35:15). The ayah does not show a deity enjoying refusal. It shows the end of a long respite, after every warning had been given.

The lesson for the living is to know your sky now. Thank Allah for the help He sends through people, while it still comes. And turn to Him directly, before the night on the moor. The contacts are real. But they were only ever streams. He is the rain.
