An-Naml 27:62

“Is He [not best] who responds to the desperate one when he calls upon Him and removes evil and makes you inheritors of the earth?[1084] Is there a deity with Allāh? Little do you remember.”

Essence

When every door has shut and you have nothing to offer, you are the very one this ayah says He answers.

A reflection

The one door an empty hand opens

In most buildings of power, access is a card. The lift in an office tower will not climb to the top floor until the right badge touches the panel. Clubs have members. Ministers have diaries. The world sorts its doors by what you bring: money, rank, a name someone recognises.

Now look at who this ayah says is answered. Not the righteous. Not the well connected. Al-muḍṭarr: the one driven to the wall. The early explanations of the word are blunt. One says he is the one worn out by hardship. Another says he has no strength and no power left. A third describes him raising his hands with no act of obedience to offer as his credential.

That last one should stop us. We come to Allah, without quite admitting it, holding our record out in front of us. The prayers kept, the charity given, the years of trying. The ayah names a caller with nothing to show, and says He answers him.

One commentary goes further. He answers the desperate even when the caller is a disbeliever or a sinner, because the sincerity of that moment has standing with Him. It gives the reason too. The sin of the sinner and the disbelief of the disbeliever take nothing from the kingdom of his Master.

Think about what that says. A human king guards his favours, because each one costs him. He answers those who might repay him. Allah answers people He knows will forget Him by evening, as the Quran describes those rescued at sea (10:22–23). If He needed to be needed, He would answer only the grateful. He answers those He knows will leave.

There is a quiet rebuke to the ego here. Our pride wants to be answered because we deserve it. The ayah offers something lower and better. You are answered because you have run out, and He has not.

The badge that opens this door is an empty hand.
