Al-Mu'minun 23:90

بَلْ أَتَيْنَـٰهُم بِٱلْحَقِّ وَإِنَّهُمْ لَكَـٰذِبُونَ

“Rather, We have brought them the truth, and indeed they are liars.”

Saheeh International

Essence

After all the questions, a plain verdict: the truth ran to them like water to a pool, and their claims about Allah fell short.

A reflection

The pivot that turns true

A carpenter hangs a heavy oak door in an old house. She shaves the frame, adjusts the hinge pin, tries it, shaves again. At last she gives it a push. It swings closed with a soft, exact click. 'There,' she says. 'Now it's true.'

The lexicons hold that same picture inside ḥaqq, truth. One traces the root to firmness and soundness: a tightly woven cloth was muḥaqqaq. Another to a perfect fit, like a door's pivot turning true in its socket. Ḥaqq is what is really there and holds firm, the opposite of bāṭil, what is empty and vanishes.

The desert gave the word flesh. A young camel entering its fourth year was a ḥiqq: now it could rightly bear a rider and a load. A man's ḥaqīqa was what he was bound to defend: his household and his honour. From the start, truth and duty were one picture. What is real puts a claim on you.

Bal ataynāhum bi-l-ḥaqq: rather, We brought them the truth. The commentaries specify it. One says the sure truth: the religion with which the Prophet ﷺ was sent, that nothing is worshipped besides Allah. Another says the true word, not their claim of partners and their denial of the resurrection.

So the ayah is not saying, We gave them one more opinion. It is saying, We gave them the thing that fits. Everything else they had built swung loose.

This is why truth is not a comfortable word in the Quran. It is not only something to agree with. It is something to bear, like the young camel bearing its first load. Once you see what is real, it asks something of you.
