Ash-Shu'ara 26:100

فَمَا لَنَا مِن شَـٰفِعِينَ

“So now we have no intercessors”

Saheeh International

Essence

Having confessed, the people of the Fire face the result: of all the intercessors they once counted on, not one stands beside them now.

A reflection

Watching others being spoken for

Several commentaries read this ayah as a sentence said while looking at someone else. The people of the Fire see the believers with intercessors: angels, prophets and fellow believers speaking on their behalf. And they say, "So we have no intercessors." The pain is not only being alone. It is watching others who are not.

A hadith in the two Sahihs describes that scene from the other side. The Prophet ﷺ described the believers on the Day of Resurrection pleading with Allah for their brothers in the Fire. No one pleads more intensely for a right. They say that these people used to fast with them, pray with them and do good with them. They are allowed to bring out those they recognise.

Notice what the believers point to. Not wealth, not status, not family name. They point to shared worship: they prayed with us. The rows at the mosque, the shared iftar, the circle of Quran on a weeknight: these are the threads that become intercession.

Picture the small group who pray dawn prayer together at a local mosque. One winter an old man who never misses is absent three days running. On the fourth morning, one of the regulars walks round after prayer and knocks on his door. He has had a fall and been lying in the hallway since the night before. Nobody else had noticed.

That is a picture of the bond the hadith describes. People who stand beside you in prayer notice when you are gone, and plead for you when you are in trouble. The question this ayah leaves is simple: who prays beside me often enough to notice my absence? And whose absence would I notice?
