Al-Fajr 89:3

وَٱلشَّفْعِ وَٱلْوَتْرِ

“And [by] the even [number] and the odd”

Saheeh International

Essence

By the even and the odd: everything made comes in pairs and needs its other, and only the One stands alone, needing nothing.

A reflection

Every strength you have comes with its pair

A heavyweight boxer, unbeaten in twelve fights, is flattened for a week by a virus he cannot see. He lies on the sofa, too weak to lift a mug, while his small daughter brings him toast. The strongest man on the street has discovered his other half.

Several early authorities read this oath as taking in all of creation. Al-shafʿ, the even, is everything made: sky and earth, land and sea, sun and moon, jinn and humankind. Al-watr, the odd, is Allah alone. The Quran says: of everything We created pairs, so that you may remember (51:49). One commentary draws out the lesson: so that you know the Creator of the pairs is One.

An early ascetic took it deeper. The even, he said, is the paired qualities of every creature. Might and humiliation, power and helplessness, strength and weakness, knowledge and ignorance, sight and blindness. The odd is Allah's qualities standing alone. Might with no humiliation. Power with no helplessness. Knowledge with no ignorance. Life with no death.

That is a mirror for the ego. Every gift you are proud of comes paired with its opposite. The quick mind has its blind spots. The healthy body has its fevers. The confident speaker lies awake at night. We polish one half in public and hide the other. Pride is simply forgetting the pair.

Only He is witr: single, with nothing lacking and nothing to be completed. Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim report that Allah is witr and loves what is witr.

Does He need His oneness to be admired? No. It is simply the truth, and He is free of need (35:15). The need runs the other way. A paired creature, always missing something, is made to lean. The boxer on the sofa leans on his daughter. Every one of us, in the end, leans on the One who never needs to lean.
