Az-Zumar 39:44

“Say, "To Allāh belongs [the right to allow] intercession entirely. To Him belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth. Then to Him you will be returned."”

Saheeh International

Essence

All intercession belongs to Allah, because all dominion does: nobody has pull with Him, and every road leads back to Him.

A reflection

Nobody has pull with Him

Li-llāhi al-shafāʿatu jamīʿan: to Allah belongs intercession, all of it. Not most of it. Not the final say over it. All of it.

That sentence quietly dismantles one of the ego's favourite comforts: having pull. Picture a man at a wedding who boasts that he can get anyone a table at any restaurant in the city. He knows the owners, the managers, the chef. People queue for his number. His sense of himself rests on access. He is someone who can get things done.

The ayah tells him there is one door where access cannot be bought, borrowed or cultivated. Before Allah, no one has leverage. Not the wealthy, not the famous, not even the most honoured of creation, except as He permits.

One commentary explains why with simple logic. To Him belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth. Intercession is part of that dominion. So He owns it too. Another adds the condition: no one intercedes before Him except by His leave.

This is humbling in the best way. Most of life trains us to look for the person who knows the person. Here the network ends. Your standing before Him cannot be arranged through anyone's contacts. Your pride in who you know means nothing at that door.

A sceptic might ask whether a God who claims all intercession for Himself is jealous of His prestige. But consider what the claim protects. If intercession could be bought or lobbied, the well-connected would win and the friendless would lose. The ayah shuts that market. The widow with no contacts stands exactly where the powerful man stands. Only Allah decides, and He is not for sale.
