Ash-Shu'ara 26:108
فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُونِ
“So fear Allāh and obey me.”
Saheeh International
Essence
Trust established, Nuh asks two things in order: guard yourselves with Allah first, then follow me in what I bring from Him.
A reflection
Allah first, and himself last
Look at the order of the three words. Fa-ttaqū: so guard yourselves. Allāha: with Allah. Only then, wa-aṭīʿūn: and obey me. A man asking for obedience could have started with himself. Nuh starts with his Lord and puts himself at the very end of the sentence.
Classical commentators explain the order as cause before effect. Mindfulness of Allah is the reason for obeying His messenger, so it comes first. Obedience to Nuh is not a second loyalty standing beside the first. It is the first loyalty taking a practical shape.
There is a detail in the written text worth pausing on. In aṭīʿūn the 'me' is reduced to almost nothing. The pronoun survives only as a short vowel under the final letter, and no letter of its own is written. One can read too much into spelling, and this is a reader's reflection, nothing more. Still, the picture suits the speaker. In the one sentence where a prophet asks to be obeyed, his 'me' is the smallest mark on the page.
Compare the way people usually ask for loyalty. A new manager arrives, and her first meeting is about how she likes things done. A charismatic speaker builds a whole room around his own name. Nuh's sentence turns that round. You are not asked to fear him. The obedience you give him passes straight through him to the One who sent him. Whoever wants followers for his own sake writes his name large. A messenger writes his last, and small.
