Ash-Shu'ara 26:136

قَالُوا۟ سَوَآءٌ عَلَيْنَآ أَوَعَظْتَ أَمْ لَمْ تَكُن مِّنَ ٱلْوَٰعِظِينَ

“They said, "It is all the same to us whether you advise or are not of the advisors.”

Saheeh International

Essence

ʿAd answer a lifetime of counsel with a shrug: your words weigh the same as silence, and you were never a counsellor anyway.

A reflection

Not even one of the admonishers

Listen to how the sentence is built. The natural pair would be: whether you admonish us or do not admonish us. That is not what ʿAd say. They say: whether you admonish, or you are not one of the admonishers at all.

Classical commentators on rhetoric stop at this swap. The second half does not deny an act. It denies a category. It means: you were never among those whose counsel counts. That is a deeper dismissal than ignoring a sermon. It erases the person who gave it.

Sawāʾ, the lexicons say, is from a root of levelling. Rough ground made flat. Two goods that weigh the same on a scale. ʿAd put Hud's words on one pan and silence on the other, and declared the scale level.

Picture a family dinner. The grandfather clears his throat and begins a story about a man who returned a wallet. Before his first sentence ends, the grandchildren's eyes have slid down to their phones. They are not rejecting the story. They decided long ago that he is not someone who says anything worth hearing.

That is the quiet violence of this ayah. Arguments can be answered. Indifference cannot. Hud had reasoned, reminded and warned. They did not refute a single point. They simply removed him from the list of people worth listening to.

Notice what the move buys them. If Hud is not an admonisher, nothing he says needs an answer. The towers need no defence. The cruelty needs no excuse. Erasing the speaker is the cheapest way to escape the speech.

That is why the move is so tempting, and so dangerous. It feels like strength. It is really a way of never having to change.
