فِى جَنَّـٰتٍ وَعُيُونٍ
“Within gardens and springs”
Saheeh International
Essence
Ṣāliḥ names their gardens and springs one by one, asking not whether comfort is wrong but whether it has become their idea of safety.
A reflection
A green exam paper
The Prophet ﷺ once described this world in two words: sweet and green. The hadith is in Sahih Muslim. He went on: Allah is making you successors in it, to see how you act.
Set that beside Ṣāliḥ's list. Gardens and springs are exactly what 'sweet and green' looks like on the ground. And Thamud were successors in the plainest sense. Another surah has Ṣāliḥ remind them that Allah made them successors after ʿĀd and settled them in the land (7:74). They had inherited a world whose last tenants had been removed.
So the gardens were not a reward handed over at the end of a test. They were the test itself, still in progress. The hadith gives the purpose in a short phrase: to see how you act. Not to see how much you own, or how green your valley is.
Picture a new head gardener at an old walled estate. On her first morning the trustees hand her a ring of keys. The roses are in bloom. The glasshouse is full of figs. Someone mentions, without much detail, that her predecessor was let go. The trustees will walk the grounds again in a year. She can enjoy the roses. She can eat a fig on her break. But she knows what the year is for.
Thamud forgot what the year was for. They treated the estate as the prize rather than the exam paper. Ṣāliḥ's question, 'will you be left secure in it?', is the trustee's reminder that someone will walk the grounds.
The Prophet's ﷺ words do not tell anyone to hate the green. He calls it sweet, and he means it. The same hadith then warns his hearers to be wary of this world. Sweetness and wariness sit in one sentence. That is the posture this ayah asks for. Enjoy the garden. Remember that you are being watched in it, kindly, by the One who planted it, to see what you do with the keys.
