Ash-Shu'ara 26:134
وَجَنَّـٰتٍ وَعُيُونٍ
“And gardens and springs.”
Saheeh International
Essence
The list of gifts closes with orchards and springs: fruit above and clear water rising from below, two things no stronghold of 'Ad could make.
A reflection
Water that was waiting before anyone built
'Ad were builders. Among the things Hud names is their maṣāniʿ (26:129). One early view, preserved in several commentaries, says these were cisterns: places built to gather and hold water. Others read them as fortified castles. Either way, they were proud of what their hands could raise.
Now Hud ends his list with springs. A cistern is something you build. A spring is something you find. The water was already there, stored and moving underground, long before anyone dug.
Picture a desert resort's glossy brochure. It praises the architect for the fountains in the lobby, the pools on every terrace. Not a word is said about where the water comes from. It is pumped from rain that fell on hills far away, long before the resort was built. The architect arranged the water. He did not make a single drop.
The Quran presses this question elsewhere. 'Have you considered the water you drink? Is it you who sent it down from the clouds, or are We the senders?' (56:68-69). And again: 'If your water were to sink away, who could bring you flowing water?' (67:30).
This is the ego's real size. We can channel, store and pipe. We cannot originate. Every engineer, however brilliant, works with a supply that was placed there for him.
Does Allah need us to admit this? No. He is not diminished if a resort forgets Him. The reminder is for the people standing by the fountain. Knowing the source changes how you drink. It makes you grateful, careful and humble at once.
So the next time you turn on a tap, pause for one breath. The water reached you through pipes someone laid. But it reached the pipes from a spring you did not open.
