Al-Fajr 89:9
وَثَمُودَ ٱلَّذِينَ جَابُوا۟ ٱلصَّخْرَ بِٱلْوَادِ
“And [with] Thamūd, who carved out the rocks in the valley?”
Saheeh International
Essence
Thamūd could cut through solid rock to carve their homes, yet never cut through to answer their prophet's call.
A reflection
They carved themselves safety
A wealthy man has done everything a security consultant suggested. Gates, cameras on every corner, a reinforced room in the basement. He sleeps well. The harm that finally reaches his family comes through none of those doors. It comes through a phone in his daughter's bedroom, from someone who never needed to touch the gate.
Thamūd were builders of that kind of safety. Jābū l-ṣakhr: they cut through the rock. The commentators explain that they hollowed out the mountains of their valley and made them into homes. Another surah adds the telling word. They used to carve homes from the mountains, feeling secure (15:82). Elsewhere their prophet asks them: will you be left secure in what is here, among gardens and springs? Carving homes out of the mountains with skill (26:146–149)?
That is the point of rock. Tents blow away; rock stays. Yet the Arabs also called a shameless man 'rock-faced'. Rock can harden more than a hillside. One classical commentary says their strength let them bring out boulders and bore through mountains. ʿĀd, before them, trusted their bodies. Thamūd trusted their engineering. They had solved the problem of the wind.
But security is not a wall. It is a question of who holds the world the wall stands in. The Quran says their end came as a shout and a trembling (11:67; 7:78). It came from a direction no chisel had faced. They woke, the Quran says, fallen on their faces in their homes. The homes stood. The people did not.
This is a sharp lesson for a technical age. We can reinforce, insure, back up, encrypt and monitor. Much of that is wise, and none of it is forbidden. The danger is the feeling the Quran names: āminīn, secure. The sense that the walls have taken care of it.
Build well, lock the door, back up the files. Then remember that the One who holds the mountain is the only real lock.
