فَنَجَّيْنَـٰهُ وَأَهْلَهُۥٓ أَجْمَعِينَ

“So We saved him and his family, all,”

Essence

Lut asked in five words; Allah answers in three, and a whole household walks out of a doomed town together.

A reflection

Three words, and everything done

Lut's prayer in the previous ayah is five words long. The answer here is three: fa-najjaynāhu wa-ahlahu ajmaʿīn. So We saved him and his family, all of them. One concise commentary adds the step the Quran leaves unspoken: so We answered his prayer, and saved him.

Notice what is not in the sentence. There is no account of the effort involved. Other ayat tell of the visitors, the journey by night and the stones that followed. Here none of that is narrated. The rescue of a household from a whole town is told as a single act. One small letter, fa, joins it to the prayer: and so.

We tell our own rescues very differently. A man gets a failing project over the line at work. That evening he writes a long post online about how he did it: the late nights, the hard calls, the people he carried. Every sentence begins with 'I'. He means no harm. He has simply made himself the centre of the story.

Allah's account of saving Lut has none of that. It does not need to persuade anyone of the difficulty, because for Him there was none. That should humble our ego a little. The things we narrate at length as our own achievements are, at best, a small part of what He does without a word of effort.

Why, then, tell it at all, and in the first person? Not for His sake. Allah is free of any need of the worlds (29:6). His greatness is not increased by our hearing it, nor lessened by our ignoring it. It is told for the one who is threatened and praying, so he knows exactly where rescue comes from. The Makkan believers who first heard this surah were a small, pressed group. They needed to know that a single household had once been lifted clear of a whole town, by a word.
