وَأَنجَيْنَا مُوسَىٰ وَمَن مَّعَهُۥٓ أَجْمَعِينَ
“And We saved Moses and those with him, all together.”
Saheeh International
Essence
Allah brought Musa and every last one with him safely out of the sea, though many of them had panicked only minutes before.
A reflection
Rescued while still afraid
Two walkers are stranded on a ledge after a fall of rock. A helicopter arrives. The first is calm, and clips herself in like a professional. The second sobs the whole way up the cable, convinced the line will snap. Ten minutes later both sit in the same cabin, wrapped in the same foil blankets. The winch did not care how brave they were.
Think about who walked out of that sea. Moments earlier, these same people had cried, 'We are overtaken' (26:61). One commentator records that they said it in blame, as if Musa had led them into a trap. An early report adds that at the water's edge they refused to wade in, all but one man.
And the ayah says ajmaʿīn: all of them, every one. The doubters and the steady, the ones who blamed and the ones who trusted. Not one was left on the seabed because his faith had wobbled at the critical moment.
Here the believer's ego needs humbling, not only the tyrant's. It is easy to think our steadiness saves us. Our prayers, our calm in a crisis, our good record. They matter, and Allah rewards them. But the verb belongs to Him: anjaynā, We rescued. The rescue was His act, not their achievement.
Across the Quran, this root behaves in a telling way. Its two heaviest forms are causative, and in nearly every case the one bringing someone out safely is Allah. A person simply getting clear by himself appears only twice. The grammar itself teaches humility.
Does Allah rescue so that we will feel indebted and praise Him? He needs nothing from anyone's gratitude. The rescue flows from His mercy, and gratitude is our gain, not His. The humble response is the sobbing walker's: arriving in the cabin and knowing exactly whose hands pulled her up.
