Saheeh International

Essence

Lut had no strength of his own against his town; Allah lifted his whole household clear, like high ground above a flood.

A reflection

He was leaning on a strong support

When We saved him. The subject of rescue is Allah, and in Lut's case there was no other candidate. Elsewhere the Quran records his words on the worst night, when the townsmen came crowding to his door. If only I had strength against you, or could take refuge in a strong support (11:80).

The Prophet ﷺ commented on that sentence with great tenderness. May Allah have mercy on Lut, he said; he was taking refuge in a strong support (Sahih al-Bukhari). Lut spoke as a man who felt alone. But he was already leaning on the strongest support there is, and We saved him is the proof.

That is a lesson for the ego. Most of us look first for our own strength: our money, our contacts, our family's standing, our ability to handle things. When those fail, we feel abandoned. Lut's story shows that the strength we lack is not the strength that saves.

Picture a builder who has spent thirty years telling everyone he can handle any job alone. He never asks for help; asking feels like weakness. Then, at two in the morning in a storm, part of his own roof gives way above his sleeping children. He finds himself on the phone to a neighbour he has barely spoken to, asking for help. He learns that night what his pride was hiding.

Allah does not tell us that He saved Lut in order to be thanked like a proud rescuer. He needs nothing from anyone. He tells us so that we stop measuring our safety by our own strength. When you feel you have no rukn, no pillar to lean on, remember the Prophet's words about Lut. You may already be leaning on the One who does not fall.
