Ash-Shu'ara · Makki · ayah 4 of 227
Ash-Shu'ara 26:4
إِن نَّشَأْ نُنَزِّلْ عَلَيْهِم مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ ءَايَةً فَظَلَّتْ أَعْنَـٰقُهُمْ لَهَا خَـٰضِعِينَ
“If We willed, We could send down to them from the sky a sign for which their necks would remain humbled.[1044]”
Saheeh International
Essence
Allah could send a sign from the sky that would bow every neck for good, yet He withholds it, wanting faith that is chosen.
A reflection
A power that will not force
'If We willed.' The ayah opens with two words that hold the whole sky. Allah could send down a sign so overwhelming that every neck in Makkah would bow and stay bowed. Not one would hold out. The commentaries are plain about why He does not. He wants faith that is chosen, not faith that is forced.
Sit with what that says about power. We know what people do with power. The manager who can override does override. The parent who can shout louder does. Our egos treat the ability to force as permission to force. Pride does not like to leave its strength unused.
Here is the One whose power has no ceiling, and He holds it back. Not from weakness: the ayah states the power first. From wisdom. A bowed neck that could not have done otherwise is worth nothing to Him.
Picture a father who owns the master key to every room in the house. His teenage daughter's door is shut. He could open it in a second. He knocks, waits, and lets her decide whether to answer. The key in his pocket makes the knock mean more, not less. She knows he could come in. She knows he chose not to.
Now the honest objection. Does He want our necks bowed at all? Is a God who desires submission simply a larger version of the proud men we distrust? The ayah answers from the inside. A proud man wants your neck bowed whether you mean it or not; the show is enough for him. This ayah sets the show aside. Forced bowing would be easy, it says, and it is not what is wanted.
What Allah asks for is something only a free person can give. And He needs none of it. The Quran says elsewhere that whoever strives, strives for himself, and Allah is free of need of the worlds (29:6).
That should humble us. The One who could bend every neck waits for yours. If He refrains from forcing you, what does it say about the times you force others?
