Ar-Rum 30:52

“So indeed, you will not make the dead hear, nor will you make the deaf hear the call when they turn their backs, retreating.”

Essence

Opening a closed heart was never the caller's work; yours is to call clearly, gently, and without force, and to stay a hearer yourself.

A reflection

The 'so' that answers a grieving heart

This ayah begins with a small letter that carries a great deal: fa, so. In An-Naml the same words come without it. Here the 'so' looks back over everything just said, and gives a reason.

Look at what has just been said. Allah sends the winds that carry the clouds (30:48). The rain falls, and people who were in despair are suddenly full of good news (30:49). Then comes the turn of 30:51. If a wind came and they saw their crops yellowed, they would go straight back to ingratitude. One classical commentator described them exactly. They despair when good is held back, rejoice when it comes, and never stay anywhere. They look at the moment, never at where it leads.

So, after all those proofs, comes this ayah. Another commentator reads it as comfort: do not grieve that they are not guided by your reminding, for you cannot make the dead hear.

The Quran shows elsewhere how heavy that grief was. 'Perhaps you would consume yourself with grief over them, if they do not believe' (18:6, and 26:3 is close). The Prophet ﷺ was not a cold announcer of truths. He minded deeply whether people were saved.

Picture an imam rewriting his Friday sermon for the fourth time. He has one man in mind, a regular at the back who never seems to hear a word. Tonight's draft is gentler, then sharper, then gentler again. This ayah sits beside that imam like a hand on his shoulder. The sermon is your work, and it is noble work. The opening of that man's heart was never on your desk.

The comfort is not 'stop caring'. It is 'stop carrying what is not yours'.
