Ash-Shu'ara 26:89
إِلَّا مَنْ أَتَى ٱللَّهَ بِقَلْبٍ سَلِيمٍ
“But only one who comes to Allāh with a sound heart."”
Saheeh International
Essence
When nothing you owned or raised can carry you, one thing gets through: a heart that reaches Allah whole, with no war left in it.
A reflection
A heart with no war left in it
Picture a desert camp at dusk, long before Islam. A rider appears on the ridge. The dogs bark and the men reach for their spears. Then the rider calls out one word: salām. The lexicons say what that word carried. No weapon, no raid, no war between us. The spears go down and the tent flap opens.
Salīm, the last word of this ayah, comes from the same root. Its plain meaning, and the one the commentaries hold to, is soundness: whole, safe, free of defect. But the root's wider family never quite lets go of that call at the edge of the camp. Something sound has nothing in it still fighting.
Read the ayah with that picture. On the Day, every person comes in over the ridge towards Allah. Wealth and sons stay behind (26:88). What you bring in is a heart.
The commentaries name what it must be free of. Most early authorities said: shirk, giving anyone a share in what is Allah's alone. Others added doubt about His oneness and the rising after death. One early authority added a sentence of real mercy. As for sins, he said, no one is free of those. The ayah does not ask for a flawless rider. It asks for one who does not come armed against his Lord.
A later scholar widened the list into five quieter wars. Shirk against His oneness. Innovation against the Prophet's ﷺ way. Desire against His command. Heedlessness against His remembrance. Whim against sincerity. Each one is a spear still raised in the dark.
So the ayah hands you a question for tonight. Is anything in me still at war with Allah? A habit I defend against His word? A resentment I keep feeding though He has told me to let it go? A doubt I nurse instead of bringing it to Him?
You do not have to arrive with a perfect heart. You have to arrive having laid the spears down.
