Ash-Shu'ara 26:88

يَوْمَ لَا يَنفَعُ مَالٌ وَلَا بَنُونَ

“The Day when there will not benefit [anyone] wealth or children”

Saheeh International

Essence

Ibrahim names the two things every human trusts to protect them, money and the people who stand with us; on that Day neither will help.

A reflection

The finest son who ever lived, and he could not help

Most readers take this ayah as a warning aimed at the rich and the proud. People who trust their bank balance, their sons, their clan. It is that.

But listen to who is speaking, and straight after what. Ibrahim has just prayed for his father, who was astray. Now he says: the Day when neither wealth nor sons will benefit.

One classical commentator records a striking reading. Sons are named here, it suggests, precisely because Ibrahim's father has just been mentioned. Meaning: Ibrahim himself would not benefit him.

Sit with that. The son in question is the friend of Allah. The most devoted, most prayerful son the world has known. He argued with his father gently, promised to pray for him, and kept his promise. His father held to his idols until he died. And on the Day, by this reading, even such a son could not carry his father across.

A barrister sits in the public gallery at her father's tribunal. She has won far harder cases than this one. She knows exactly what should be said. But she may not speak. She is family, not counsel, and the hearing goes on without her.

Hold that image through the whole ayah: a child standing beside a parent, with all their love and all their ability, and empty hands.

So the comfortable assumption has to go. This is not only about other people's arrogance. It reaches the most loving family on earth. No child of yours, however righteous, can stand in for your own heart. And you cannot stand in for theirs.
