An-Naml 27:82

“And when the word [i.e., decree] befalls them,[1087] We will bring forth for them a creature from the earth speaking to them, [saying] that the people were, of Our verses, not certain [in faith].”

Saheeh International

Essence

Near the Hour a creature from the earth will tell people one thing: they had the signs, but never let them become certainty.

A reflection

The beast's whole message is about certainty

Of everything a creature brought out of the earth might say, the ayah records one sentence. People were not certain of Our signs. It does not say they had no signs. It does not say they had never heard. It says they lacked yaqīn.

That is a precise charge. Yaqīn is knowledge from which doubt has gone, knowledge that has come to rest in the heart. Many of the people this creature addresses will have known a great deal. They will have heard the ayat recited and buried their own parents. What they never did was let any of it settle.

Picture a man who can still write out the table of stopping distances from his driving theory test. He passed it with full marks. Every morning he sits two car-lengths behind a lorry on the motorway, in the rain. He knows. He is not certain. The knowledge has never reached his right foot.

The ayah's charge falls on exactly that gap. The signs were enough to produce certainty, and people kept them at the level of information. A fact you can recite but never act on is a fact you are not certain of, whatever you would say if asked.

The Prophet ﷺ named three things after whose appearance faith no longer benefits a soul that had not believed before. They are the sun rising from its place of setting, the Dajjal, and the beast of the earth (Sahih Muslim). Put that beside this ayah. The beast's arrival is the moment when certainty becomes unavoidable, and so no longer counts as a choice.

So the ayah quietly asks which certainty you are waiting for. One kind is built now, from signs that could still be doubted, by a heart that chooses to trust them. The other kind will be handed to everyone at once by a creature from the ground. By then it will change nothing.
