Essence

Ṭā Sīn Mīm returns, the same three letters as Ash-Shuʿarāʾ, now opening the fullest telling of Musa's life in the Quran.

A reflection

The same three letters, now the long telling

Ṭā Sīn Mīm has been heard before. It opened Ash-Shuʿarāʾ, two surahs back. Now it returns, and what follows it is the fullest telling of Musa's life anywhere in the Quran.

One commentary traces how the three neighbouring surahs fit together. In Ash-Shuʿarāʾ, Pharaoh throws two facts at Musa. 'Did we not raise you among us as a child?' (26:18). And there was the deed he had done. Musa answers in a single line: 'I fled from you when I feared you' (26:21). In An-Naml the story jumps ahead to a man on a dark road telling his family, 'I have glimpsed a fire' (27:7).

Those were glimpses. Al-Qaṣaṣ opens them out, in the order they happened. The baby and the river. The palace that raised him. The blow that killed a man. The flight to Madyan, the well, the marriage, the long years. Then the fire again, now with everything that led up to it.

Picture a grandfather who crossed a sea as a young man. For forty years he has given his family one sentence about it. 'It was a hard journey, and Allah brought us through,' he says, and no more. Then, one winter evening, with a grandchild asleep against his arm, he tells all of it. The boat. The night the engine failed. The stranger who shared his water. The room goes quiet. The sentence they had heard a hundred times now has a body.

Something like that happens here. The same three letters that opened the summary now open the full account. A reader who has met Musa in passing is about to sit with him from his first day.

There is a lesson here about how the Quran teaches. It does not always give everything at once. It lets you meet a story in pieces and carry those pieces for a while. Then it returns to fill them in.

If parts of your own understanding still feel like glimpses, that is not failure. The fuller telling may simply be further on.
