Al-Qasas · Makki · ayah 56 of 88
Al-Qasas 28:56
“Indeed, [O Muḥammad], you do not guide whom you like, but Allāh guides whom He wills. And He is most knowing of the [rightly] guided.”
Saheeh International
Essence
Not even the Prophet ﷺ could place faith in his beloved uncle's heart; Allah alone guides, and knows best who will accept it.
A reflection
The one door no love can open
Consider who is being addressed. Innaka, 'you', is the most eloquent man who ever spoke, the most patient teacher, the most sincere friend. The Quran itself calls him a light-giving lamp (33:46). And this ayah tells him: you do not guide whom you love.
If that is said to him, it is said to every one of us with greater force. One commentary puts the logic plainly. If the noblest of creation cannot place guidance in a heart, how could anyone else?
This is where the ego of the persuader shrinks. We like to think our arguments win people. A devoted parent assumes a well-raised child will believe. A gifted speaker counts the people who embraced Islam after his talk. A spouse assumes that enough love will soften the other. Each is half true. Each quietly claims a power that belongs to Allah alone.
An eye surgeon can remove a cataract with perfect skill. She can clear the clouding, fit a new lens, and shine a light straight in. She cannot make the patient look. The seeing is not hers to give.
That is the shape of this ayah. A messenger carries the lamp. He can bring it right to the bedside. But the opening of the eyes, the heart turning towards the light, lies in other Hands.
Wa-lākinna Allāha yahdī man yashāʾ: but Allah guides whom He wills. The sentence pivots on lākinna, 'but'. Everything human sits before the hinge. Everything decisive sits after it.
Is it domineering for Allah to keep this to Himself? Notice the next words: He is most knowing of those who are guided. He does not hold the key out of need, or to be flattered. He holds it because only He sees into every heart. Our humility here is not a defeat. It is simply standing in the right place.
